5th graders had the opportunity today to contribute to ecosystem management and restoration in the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park waters. Students learned about the importance of the Chesapeake Bay to the Mid Atlantic region and how they could play a part in improving water quality and restoring the population numbers of key species. 7th graders built monuments to key figures in American history and wrote persuasive essays to convince the federal government to construct their monuments on the National Mall. 8th graders worked on a printmaking project inspired by James Lesesne Wells, an accomplished graphic artist, printmaker, and painter associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Wells taught printmaking and various other crafts and fine arts at Howard University and was influential in approaches to art education. Students discussed how Wells used linoleum blocks to create his art. Students drew designs on tracing paper before carving them into foam board, then used markers to color the foam board. They then printed them onto paper using water to help transfer the colors. Because 8th graders recently completed short research projects on the Harlem Renaissance, they were asked to reflect on musicians who rose to prominence during that time period and create prints of instruments integral to much of the music of the era. #teaching #teachers #education #students #middleschool #art #steameducation
