We would like to recognize the life and career of an icon of the #HTM community in #Texas - Sal Cruz, Director of #ClinicalEngineering at Cook Children's Health Care System Sal is a US Navy veteran who served our country in Afghanistan. During his deployments, Sal honed his craft maintaining and repairing medical devices while also supporting operations beyond the wire. He would go on to pass the critical knowledge and skills acquired on these deployments to US military #BMETs at "The Schoolhouse" at Sheppard Air Force Base in #WichitaFalls. In November 2009, Sal began a new chapter at Cook Children's Health Care System in #FortWorth. He immediately began to implement new processes to extend the lifecycle of equipment at the hospital. During his tenure, Sal's teams have maintained all assets they've been entrusted with as Cook Children's flagship campus has quadrupled in size with expansions of the Dotson Specialty Clinic, as well as the North and South Towers. In 2023, Sal's leadership was integral to the opening of a new 125 bed facility: Cook Children's Medical Center Prosper. Their mission continues as the main hospital looks to add the West Tower in 2027. Sal is a #maverick who tends to think outside the box. His ingenuity was apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic when his team setup a UV room to remove pathogens from critical assets. Throughout the years, he has consistently found refreshing ways to inspire his technicians through events and initiatives such as the HTM Games during HTM Week. As of today, Sal has been at Cook Children's for 16 years. He oversees multiple teams including Clinical Engineering, Durable Medical Equipment Service Team, Electronics Tech Department, Imaging, General Biomed, Equipment Distribution, and Surgery Biomedical Equipment Technicians. In regards to Sal's dedication, one Cook Children's employee summarized it this way: "Sal wholeheartedly takes the Cook Children’s mission deep to heart- that every kid deserves a chance to be healthy. He will move heaven and earth to make sure each child gets their care." Sal is the first-ever recipient of HTMA-NTX's Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was presented to Sal by his peers as a special salute to his remarkable career, where his dedication to our field, impact, and legacy have left an indelible mark on those who have had the privilege to work with him.
