Sekou Bermiss, Ph.D., who has contributed to HR Exchange Network and recently spoke to NPR about DEI, a subject he researches, kindly shared our latest news piece. This one is about how Trump has encouraged the abolishment of DEI across the public and private sector and what HR can do in response. The point is to understand what is happening and figure out how to ensure inclusion and positive workplace cultures can still flourish. The second coming of the CHRO is upon us. We've always known of the magic they make. But in 2020, others in leadership finally recognized the importance of CHROs. They were truly getting a seat at the C-suite table. Now, we're paying attention again. The change keeps coming at us. Demographic shifts are causing a labor shortage. A new administration means different rules and regulations. So, who do we turn to? The CHRO. ?? ?? ?? ?? In her most recent piece, Vaso Perimenis Ekstein, SPHR, sHRBP, MBA, HR Exchange Network Advisory Board member, offers advice on how to ensure you find the right CHRO for your organization. Read the latest post from HR Exchange Network editor Francesca Di Meglio to learn about the Trump RTO mandate and how it is having a ripple effect in the private sector. What does this mean for remote work? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. #rto #remotework #workfromhome #wfh #hr #humanresources
Is remote work dead forever? We're all sick of talking politics. And you may have noticed that I have avoided talking about President Donald J. Trump's return. But we at HR Exchange Network cannot turn away from the dramatic changes the administration's policies are having on the workplace. I, personally, have a stake in this discussion. I've been working remotely since 2004, long before it was a norm. First, I worked from home because of an injury I suffered that required three surgeries on my knee and two years of physical therapy. Then, I worked remotely while I dated and later married my husband who lived in Italy at the time. Finally, it became a must as I became a mom for the first time. Now, I'm the mom of two, including one child who is disabled. I do not foresee returning to an office ever. For the hours I work, my sons are either in school or with other caretakers. But working remotely makes it possible to answer another caretaker's question about my son's needs in real time. It also means I'm avoiding a commute and all the traffic typical of where I live in the NYC tri-state area. This is vital when you're administering medications before and after work, must stick to a more rigid feeding schedule for medical reasons, and flush your son's feeding tube regularly. Remote work allows me to have a much more certain and consistent schedule. The employers win, too. In all the years I've been doing this from home, I can assure you that my employers - whether I worked full time or as a contract worker - got more out of me than the in-office employers I have had. I am "on" all the time when I'm working from home. With the smart phone now, it's even truer than before. I answer emails, respond to LinkedIn messages, post more, respond more, work more. The difference in productivity is immense. When I worked in NYC, right over the bridge from my hometown, I would commute home at the end of the day and not look at work again until I rolled up in the office the next morning. I never worked early mornings, late nights, or on weekends. Never. I always do now. Still, almost as soon as he took office, Trump signed an order forcing government workers to return to the office full time. Many in the private sector, including Meta, JPMorgan Chase, AT&T, and others, were already forcing remote workers back to the office in some capacity if not full time. These return to office mandates represent a return to a time when the employer had significant leverage over the employee. Who will win out? What does the future hold for remote work? Read, like, and share my latest article on this subject. Then, let me know what you think. Are we going back to 2019 or even earlier? Or is remote work here to stay? Generative artificial intelligence, also known as genAI, is not just an elixir for efficiency and productivity. It also helps us better collaborate. You can build stronger teams. Sounds far fetched? It's not at all. Take a look at the recent column, DimEnsIons of Organizational Development, which is all about how to use gen AI to help your teams better collaborate. LaKisha C. Brooks, DiversityArchitect?, CDR, CAIS outlines the ways to leverage the technology for remote and hybrid workforce collaboration, improve communication, streamline projects, and more. Read, like, and share the column. See the comments for the link to the article. Then, let us know how you're using generative AI. How will you apply these ideas to your team? This is super timely considering yesterday's news about China's DeepSeek possibly surpassing OpenSource ChatGPT. So, let's open up the lines of communication. #technology #ai #artificialintelligence #generativeai #genai Image created using OpenAI's DALL·E

Gen Z is lazy. Right? Gen Z has no ambition. Right? Gen Z doesn't want to get off their parent's couches. Right? Those are the lines we've been fed. When you read about the latest trend of Gen Z workers - conscious unbossing, which refers to the idea that you should avoid promotions and management positions - you can easily believe those stereotypes. But when you dig deeper, there's a lot more to this story and to Gen Z. And we all need to take a good look in the mirror. After all, Baby Boomers and Gen Xers like me were around to raise Gen Z, not to mention Millennials. Who's really to blame here? ?? I don't think it is laziness anyway. I think it is a matter of a failed American dream, broken promises, and a different set of priorities. Hear me out. Just this week, news hit that Gen X would be the first generation to have less financial security than their parents and grandparents in the later part of their life. We learned that they may never see retirement. They may just have to keep working. If their health fails, they might not even be able to afford it. ?? You think Millennials and Gen Z didn't see what was happening. You think they didn't realize that the rewards after paying dues and living to work (as opposed to working to live) were never coming. You think those student loan debts that never materialized into a good ROI had nothing to do with this "laziness"? I think you're mistaken. ?? Eventually, something has got to give. There will have to be major changes. Maybe we'll replace the traditional hierarchy at work. Maybe we'll all prioritize work-life balance and come up with different ways of collaborating and doing business. Maybe we'll address corporate greed. Once we're gone and Gen Z is in charge, those conclusions are inevitable. ?? Until then, let's learn what we can about conscious unbossing. Let's not jump to conclusions. You can begin with an article I've written for HR Exchange Network (see link in the comments). Please, please let me know what you think. Lazy or smart enough to realize the rewards might not equate with the dues paid? You decide. Happy weekend to all the generations at work! ?? #genz #genx #millennials #hr #humanresources #talentmanagement Jessie DaSilva (I didn't even get around to mentioning that the machines may take their jobs, but I did get ChatGPT to create a cartoon to go with this post.) In this week in process excellence, our editor, Amelia Brand, highlights a crucial update from the process community: the EU’s Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA). Taking effect on January 17, 2025, DORA introduces stricter regulations for financial institutions and ICT providers, focusing on enhancing cybersecurity and operational resilience. ?? The stakes are high: Noncompliance could lead to fines of up to €5 million or 2% of annual turnover for critical third parties. ?? “DORA was designed to reduce operational disruption,” explains Jason Smith, Senior Principal at Conga. “The penalties for noncompliance are severe, especially for critical third parties.” Firms are racing to meet compliance standards, leveraging tools like automation for risk management, data security, and recovery strategies. DORA is not a one-time effort—it’s a strategic imperative for long-term resilience. In other news: ?? PEX Network advisory board member, Doug Shannon ?? joins Forbes Technology Council ?? ?? In this week in process excellence, Editor Michael Hill delves into McDonald's Operational Efficiency Drive and Strategic Shifts ?? McDonald’s is ramping up efforts to enhance operational efficiency through internal competitions aimed at boosting traffic, speeding up service, and advancing digital execution. These initiatives, combined with a renewed focus on cost discipline, reflect the fast-food giant’s commitment to process excellence. ?? ?? According to Selendis Research, McDonald’s has seen significant improvements in customer satisfaction scores and service times. The company is also optimizing costs through strategic transformations and targeted investments, ensuring operational resilience and efficiency. ?? On another front, McDonald’s is scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals, moving away from aspirational representation targets and supplier diversity pledges. Instead, the company plans to integrate inclusive practices into its day-to-day operations, a shift seen across other major organizations like Ford Motor Company and Walmart.
