I fell into the trading and shipping industry without any knowledge of the subject whatsoever and with no qualifications beyond high school. I was fortunate to have a shipping expert as my (undeclared) mentor, Hamid Baig. He was an unassuming man who had such a thorough and complete knowledge of shipping, chartering and shipowning, that for any question, he had a complete answer and a fascinating story to go with it. Back then, I was working at a rice trading company and touching on all areas of the business. Hamid told me that I needed to become an expert in the areas that I found interesting and suggested the Institute of Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) membership exams. I am forever grateful to him for pushing me in this direction. I became a member around 2006 and a Fellow in 2011. I met some wonderful people while studying for the exams and through being a member, notably Roderick Schlick, Austin Dooley, Angela Hunt, Jean Fran?ois Commaret, Aleksandr Konoplitski, Jonathan Le Feuvre, Michael Deslarzes, Nigel Cleave, Punit Oza, FICS, AFNI, LLB, M.Sc., John Phillips, Jeffrey Blum FICS FCIArb, and many others. What a fantastic way to kick off Geneva Commodity Week ?? – bringing together bringing together a veritable who’s who of the Geneva commodity world. And more people than ever, all in one place! ? I was honoured to be invited by SUISSENéGOCE and had the pleasure of sitting next to Pierre-Edouard Dolhen, MBA, MSc – a brilliant colleague I’ve had the joy of teaching with in the past. ?? ? The performance by Top Secret Drum Corps was electric and the auction a huge success in raising funds for SVAMV Schweiz. ?? Kicking off the Trading Commodity Adventure at HEG - Genève!??? ? This semester, 46 students have embarked on the #IBM Trading Commodity Minor program, led by our dedicated lecturers Julie Noller?(course minor coordinator and lecturer of the Front Office courses) and Richard Watts (lecturer of the physical operations courses). It's been an exciting start! ? ? Climate Fresk Workshop: On day one, students dove deep into the impacts of climate change with the interactive Climate Fresk (collaborative workshop created by Cédric Ringenbach), guided by Julie and Richard. An eye-opener on how the trading sector influences our environment. ? ? Maritime Transport Efficiency Conference (MTEC) : At the end of September, the Maritime Transport Efficiency Conference was held in Geneva. Lo?c Aubert and Mathias Hochstrasser, two IBM students, had the privilege of being invited to this major event. They even saw the talents of our two HEG speakers?on stage, Julie Noller as speaker and moderator to talk about the carbon market and Richard Watts as the conference's main moderator. ? ?? Guest Speaker Nicolas Juge : Finally, our students welcomed Nicolas Juge, Head of Cargo Miller Insurance Services LLP, as the first speaker of the semester. With the greatest of ease, Nicolas fascinated our students by telling his story and sharing his experience as an intermediary between the ‘trader, charterer’ (the insured) and the insurers. Nicolas gave a brilliant illustration of his profession and aroused the interest of our students, who subjected him to a series of more than twenty questions! Our sincere thanks to Nicolas ?
