How will they know unless they are taught? Some of our learning is by way of what we see, and that is certainly true of children. They are constantly learning how to respond to what they feel by how they observe the adults in their lives. The two most popular emotions I hear caregivers say they try not to show in front of their kids is anger and sadness. I get it, but ya know kids have this funny way of picking up when you’re not being genuine or that something is wrong. Show them how to experience their emotions safely, so they don’t learn how to conceal them. Sometimes it’s simply letting the tear fall and saying “today has been hard for me”. Or saying “I’m feeling a little frustrated and need some time to myself” Sometimes they just need someone to show them how it’s done ?? #howzeyourhealth #mentalhealth #kidsmentalhealth #childdevelopment #playtherapy

Check in with yourself during this Election. I understand many may be experiencing a range of emotions but take care of yourself. That could look like… 1. Giving social media a break 2. Checking the news if and when you have the mental capacity to do so 3. Coming together with friends and family 4. Doing an activity you enjoy (art, watching your favorite movie, exercise/outdoor time etc.) Whatever it is, let’s start by asking Howze Your Health? And go from there. #howzeyourhealth #mentalhealth #election #electionday

Fred Roger’s once said this in his documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor while describing his own childhood. I imagine a lot of kids have felt this, and maybe even you yourself. I wonder what would happen if we leaned more into where the child is versus where we think they should be, how different our understanding of them could be. Play Therapy allows children to use a natural method of communication to express and explore how they are experiencing their world. Sometimes you may think, “they should be sharing this in therapy” or “I want you to talk to them about that” as a caregiver or trusted adult in their lives. This is understandable, as you want to see them supported through their challenges. This is met with good intentions but imagine going to your therapist and someone else has already laid out your agenda. Through play they can intentionally address challenges that may be more difficult to face if they have to cognitively come up with a response. So I can’t make them talk but I can create a space that makes them feel safe enough to heal. #howzeyourhealth #mentalhealth #playtherapy #childtherapist

Happy World Mental Health Day! I know we are recognizing it today, but make sure you are finding ways to care for yourself and the little ones you love everyday. Treat your wellness like your DAILY vitamins, so it doesn’t become the medicine you need. Here’s some tips on how to create healthier habits for your wellness: 1. Set boundaries and maintain them. Kids are also able to set boundaries. If they don’t want to hug others, it’s not rude they are setting boundaries for their bodies let’s try and honor that. 2. Exercise! Even if that is an evening walk or bike ride with the family. It helps reduce stress and produce some of those feel good hormones 3. Honor your feelings and your child’s (or a child you love). We experience a range of emotions. Let them know all of them are acceptable by modeling for them healthy ways of experiencing them. Also in honor of World Mental Health Day, In My Mind coloring and activity book is on sale for $10 today only at howzeyourhealth.com. This coloring and activity book take you beyond the story and introduce coloring and activities that support connections to your emotions and exploration of healthier thoughts. School is back in Session! As everyone prepares to head back into the school building I want to name something that we have been challenged with over the years, and that’s failing to identify the needs of the “good child”. It may be easy to identify challenging behaviors that disrupt the classroom. We know this could be due to a number of factors like transitions, trauma, challenging home environment, other diagnosis, etc. However, it’s also helpful to be mindful of the “good child”. You know the one we say “we never have to worry about ______” Sometimes that compliant, quiet, good child has experienced the above as well but swinging on the other side of the pendulum. What appears to be a child with a calm demeanor could also be a child who is dysregulated but missed because they aren’t causing the same level of disruption or appear to not need the same level of attention. That’s not to say EVERY quiet or calm demeanor child is experiencing this but we hope it draws your attention to not conclude that they don’t need support due to their expression. Tips: 1. Support connecting kids/parents to their wellness team at school 2. Introduce mindfulness practices that help bring them to the present or connect them to their bodies. Ex: Helping them through 5,4,3,2,1. Naming 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste For more like this, subscribe to our newsletters at www.howzeyourhealth.com Let’s be Well together ?? https://lnkd.in/eC9p8cVY #howzeyourhealth #childtherapy #mentalhealth #backtoschool

SUMMER Wellness!! This week I had an opportunity to share at a summer camp about ANGER ??. We talked about whether or not it was okay to be angry, where we experience anger in the body and events that might fuel our anger. We also had a chance to introduce other words associated with the word anger by playing the Howze Your Health feelings card game. We ended our time with learning ways to lean into our anger in safely and opportunities to practice new coping skills. Oh and we had another round of the feelings card game because well, they were excited to keep playing!! ?? Self Check: 1. Is it okay to be angry? 2. What are some things that make you angry? 3. What does it look like when you get angry? 3. How does anger show up in your body? 4. Do you have safe ways to express your anger? If the answer is NO to this question try ripping paper, breathing exercises, moving your body or exercise, yell/scream! Just don’t hold it in… Let’s be well together ?? https://lnkd.in/eFdP979Z #howzeyourhealth #playtherapy #mentalhealth #summer

Can we reframe attention seeking? When babies cry to be picked up we don’t say they are looking for attention, but we understand there is a NEED to be met. The baby used whatever method they knew to establish connection to their caregiver. Why do we assume that now since they know a few more words that kids have all the language necessary to articulate what they need? How have getting needs met been modeled and responded to in front of them? Would you be willing to exchange attention seeking for seeking connection if you knew the answers above? *All needs aren’t communicated verbally #howzeyourhealth #mentalhealth #childtherapy #playtherapy
