Our Executive Director Mahad Wasuge & Deputy Director Farhan Isak Yusuf welcomed Jerry McCann & Meghan E. Brown from Build Up ^ in our office in Mogadishu. We discussed elections in Somalia and strengthening the SPA and Build Up collaboration on mutual strategic focus areas.

I'm aware that this was documented a while ago but for it to still be happening today suggests that changes made to address bias were limited and have not been updated. Leaves me wondering about the newer AI tools/platforms and their biases----- In this quick video from our data course / ethics module, I demonstrate the biases present in digital platforms and technologies we use daily, focusing on Google Translate's gender biases when translating Swahili to English. I showcase how specific words and occupations are gendered inaccurately, highlighting the need for awareness and potential impact. Just raising awareness. https://lnkd.in/dA6JX9i2? This last week was Build Up's annual team retreat and what Julie Hawke wrote on this sticky as her elevator pitch makes me happy. A team that is a work-home.
