The week-long event is designed for everyone, establishing a platform for individuals both in and outside the energy and climate sphere to showcase Houston's efforts to global spectators. Thank you to Baker Hughes for hosting this important conversation! Marie Merle Caekebeke was a fantastic moderator, Erin Fitzpatrick championed MendIt?, Inc., and the always-fabulous duo Ahshia Berry & Sarah-Jayne Smith rocked it. We are also grateful to Khyati Mehta & Briana Lyssy for their support organizing, and to Allyson Anderson Book and Katie Mehnert for first dreaming up this event. We hope the participants walked away with eyes wide open to the deep and complex issues facing the industry that makes our clothes -- an industry that touches every single person, just like the energy industry.
Did you know that the equivalent of a truckload of textiles is landfilled or incinerated?every second worldwide? And that 85% of all the stuff we own ends up in landfills? I gained some interesting insights at a thought-provoking discussion about sustainable fashion hosted by, and at Baker Hughes with two small businesses in Houston, MendIt?, Inc. and Magpies & Peacocks, with a fun clothes swap as part of the inaugural Houston Energy and Climate Week. Three actions I walked away with (along with some new outfits!): - Extend shelf life of your clothing as much as possible. Mend it as needed, swap, or re-use it in different ways - Resist the urge to splurge on fast fashion. Spend on few high quality pieces in your wardrobe and get creative with it. Make vintage cool!? - Support small businesses that source ethically - labor conditions in fashion industry in developing countries are often deplorable; be aware and think before you spend. I know many colleagues at Baker Hughes who model this - as we believe sustainability really starts with each of us and our choices. This was a perfect start to the countdown for Climate Group's #ClimateWeekNYC later this month! #WeAreBakerHughes #Sustainability #SustainableFashion

The inaugural Houston Energy and Climate Week was a huge success. Over 50 events all over Houston, including the Grit Awards at the House of Blues, and an uplifting closing ceremony keynote speech by James Keyes. I had a great time learning and meeting people from all over the world! So, mark your calendars for Sept. 15 to 19, 2025! #HoustonEnergyandClimateWeek #GritAwards #RenewableEnergy

Houston Energy and Climate Week has been outstanding! I have a renewed confidence in our ability to bridge the energy transformation to include all forms of energy sources. Sally Lechin Today was the closing ceremony. I won’t call it closing….. I call the start of a continued conversation.

The work we do today in these spaces will define the future we leave behind. And in moments like Global X Local, we can see a glimpse of that future—one that is sustainable, inclusive, and deeply connected to the global and local communities we serve. We hold the power to transform not just industries, but societies—by fostering a culture where every participant, from industry leader to artist to entrepreneur, becomes a catalyst for change. As we navigate this complex transition, the importance of spaces like this cannot be overstated. They remind us that the energy transition is not just a technical revolution, but a human one. It’s about empowering individuals, cultivating collaboration across disciplines, and recognizing that every voice has a role to play in shaping the future. Civil Dialogues was honored to host our first town hall on energy at the opening ceremonies of Houston Energy and Climate Week on September 9, 2024. "We need to fight the changing climate, not each other.?We respect democracy, civil dialogue, diverse ideas, productivity, and pragmatism.?" That part of HECW's Unity Commitment, guiding the week's events, is in perfect alignment with the mission of Civil Dialogues and this podcast. And so is the ethos of this week's guest, Theo E.J. Wilson, climate activist, actor, entrepreneur, poet, and host of "I Was There" on the History Channel. His TEDX on race in America has been viewed 18 million times. After meeting and interviewing him on the panel, I needed more time to explore his provocative perspectives. So I invited him to keep the conversation going and share it with all of you. From climate justice to going undercover in the Alt-Right movement to the art of having a civil dialogue, nothing was off limits. This is one you don't want to miss. #newepisode https://lnkd.in/gD9ar3jK

Today started at the Ion with Joey Sanchez continuing the work of purpose and connection, and it ended with new connections at Houston Energy and Climate Week, where I got to participate in a panel on reimagining the energy future in our city. It was hard to follow James Keyes, former CEO of Blockbuster and 7-Eleven, who reminded us that change = opportunity and learning is what matters. ?? It was also hard to follow Fernando Moguel performing a Houston climate and energy anthem. ?? Our panel focused on the diverse ecosystem of sustainability, where tensions and oppositional voices are just as important as agreement. We have to pressure to grow. ?? And we have to come together to act. ?? Thanks Bill Shireman for moderating and so lovely to meet fellow panelists Trevor Best, Jason Fischer, MBA, and Adam Lake. Big thank you to Katie Mehnert and Juliana Garaizar for doing the hard work of coalition building, and people like Ginny Philps, Lisa Gianukos, and many more for their support! It’s on Houston to lead toward a more sustainable future. ???
