Did you know 1 in 3 birds migrating through the U.S. passes through Texas? ?? Most migrate at night, using the moon and stars to navigate, but bright city lights disorient them, leading to collisions and exhaustion. How can you help them??? ?? Join HARC for the Lights Out Campaign by turning off non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during migration season, especially during peak spring migration season (April 22 – May 12), to keep birds safe.? ?? Do not use landscape lighting to light up trees or gardens where birds may be resting.? ?? Close blinds at night to reduce the amount of light being emitted from windows. HARC is proud to be a partner of and participate in Houston Audubon’s Lights Out Campaign. As a Certified Bird Friendly Facility, we’re doing our part to protect migratory birds. Join us in making Texas skies safer for our feathered friends! As extreme heat events become more frequent, community-driven solutions are more important than ever.? South Texas is already feeling the heat! With temperatures soaring to 100°F in early March, it’s setting the stage for a long, intense summer. These record-breaking temperatures raise concerns about increased wildfire risks, higher energy demands, and the overall impact of extreme heat on communities. Last summer, HARC partnered with local organizations to map urban heat across Houston and Harris County. The data collected helps identify heat-prone areas, informing solutions like tree planting, cool roofs, and better urban design to reduce heat exposure.
