As we observed World Homeless Day this Thursday, we reflected on the compassionate closure of the Cooper Street Encampment, a long-standing site in our community. Over the past two years, through dedicated efforts and collaboration, 64 individuals were successfully transitioned from the encampment into stable housing. This achievement highlighted the collective commitment to addressing homelessness with care and dignity. During this year’s closure: 50 individuals?were on the by-name list 30 have already moved into permanent housing 9 more are scheduled to move in?by Friday, October 11 11 are actively working on documents?and next steps toward housing This progress is a reminder that?together, we can make a difference. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced new resources to support the retrofitting and weatherization of affordable housing. HUD launched a new technical assistance guide to leveraging federal funds and updated its funding navigator tool to help communities utilize federal investments to make climate and resiliency upgrades.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently reported on the current challenges and complexities for commercial properties trying to obtain and maintain insurance, including multifamily rental properties. Darion Dunn, P.E. Dunn, Co-Chair of HouseATL's Rental Housing Preservation Working Group, noted that the insurance industry seems to be operating with a bias against affordable housing properties. “Insurance carriers often ask about the number of subsidized units at a property, which factors into their decision to insure the property and at what price,” Dunn said in an email. “This creates a dynamic in which affordable properties are burdened with higher insurance costs because they are presumed to be inherently more dangerous than luxury properties.”
