Hospice of Northwest Ohio served its first patients in 1981 and is the Toledo area's largest provider of hospice care. A non-profit, community-based organization, we are the only local agency solely dedicated to caring for the terminally ill. In 2015, we served more than 2,500 patients and their families in their own homes, in nursing homes and at our freestanding Hospice Centers. We are Joint Commission accredited and Medicare/Medicaid certified. No one is ever turned away due to inability to pay. Our mission: Hospice of Northwest Ohio provides specialized medical, emotional and spiritual care to people of all ages--and their families--living with any end-stage illness in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Equally important, we also provide support and education to their families and caregivers.

We are grateful for the more than 200 volunteers who help us make a difference for patients and families every day.

Congratulations to our Michigan-based home care team for earning a 5-star rating from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. A "5-star hospice" according to CMS refers to a hospice agency that has received the highest possible rating on the Medicare Care Compare website, signifying exceptional quality of care based on patient and family caregiver feedback, as measured through the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. Five stars indicates significantly above average care compared to other hospices.

In honor of National Retro Day, we celebrate being the first hospice in Ohio to receive its Medicare certification. The Medicare Hospice Benefit was established in 1983 to provide Medicare beneficiaries with access to high-quality end-of-life care. This was watershed moment for Hospice of Northwest Ohio as we could finally receive reimbursement for care we had been providing since 1981!
