Last week, our Colorado team met with and taught young women about the world of civil engineering at the Transportation and Construction GIRL Day in Golden, Colorado. During this event, our team hosted an interactive activity where young women learned about civil engineering concepts that go into building a park. Our sand tables featured several hands-on civil engineering concepts, including identifying utilities such as buried power, sewer, water, and gas lines; determining existing environmental factors to protect; proposing additional design elements such as roadways, sidewalks, bridges, and trails; and determining the best location for structural elements such as playgrounds or skate parks. In some of our demonstrations, girls were asked to negotiate the land rights before they could begin building! Thank you to everybody who attended this event to empower young women and help them consider new opportunities and careers in the industry!?
Our Colorado team had a great time meeting with and teaching young women about the world of civil engineering at the Transportation and Construction GIRL Day held on Sept 26 in Golden, Colorado. During the event, we hosted an interactive activity where young women learned about civil engineering concepts that go into building a park. Our sand tables featured several hands-on civil engineering concepts, including buried power, sewer, water, and gas lines to identify; existing environmental factors needing to be protected; roadways, sidewalks, bridges, and trails to include in the design; and determining the best location for structural elements such as playgrounds or skate parks. In some of our demonstrations, girls were asked to negotiate the land rights before they could begin building. ? Additionally, we created a matching game which required girls to read a short job description with photos, then match it with the civil engineering career the pictures describe.? ? This event means so much to me as a woman who, as a young person, never knew all the avenues civil engineering offered.?Never did I ever think I would work for an engineering firm, much less hold a position where I have the chance to learn about, understand, and then share in these opportunities to empower young women to consider and explore careers in the industry. ? I'm humbled by Horrocks’ commitment to service and the opportunity I have here to give back to our community.?
