We talk a lot about making incremental improvements that are welcoming to both our business community and our residents. We talk a lot about seeing our town with visitor glasses. If this was our first interaction with our town, would we want to come back, would we “feel” anything? In 2020, we set out to do more than make an incremental improvement, we set out to transform our downtown. Many buildings on the square were empty and we hoped that if we invested in making our downtown more inviting, private investment would come. Today, 4 years later, our project is complete and the private investment has came and continues to do so. Since 2020 we’ve welcomed 6 new businesses to the square 4 long-term apartments with at least 2 new businesses nearing completion and 2 new short-term apartments. The Civic Center is thriving and continues to draw patrons to downtown. Here are before and after pictures. I wrote a note of gratitude to Jeff Siegler at Revitalize, or Die. If you haven’t read his blogposts, you’re missing out as a local government administrator. His words are empowering, bold, and inspiring. This is the product of dreaming big and delivering for your community. Not everyone welcomes change and improvement but your community is better for it and you’ll instill more pride which leads to more participation than you will apathy. If you’re questioning whether it is worth it to make transformational change to your town…it is, I invite you to come see for yourself. Special thanks to W Brian Ziegler and his team Horner & Shifrin, Inc., Illinois Department of Transportation, and Samron Midwest Contracting for bringing this vision to life. The City of Marion, Illinois is grateful for your work. Personally, I’ve never been more proud of my hometown. When I was in high school, Marion was a place every senior looked to depart from. I have a different view now, and I hope our seniors do as well. I certainly know we have other issues to address and we are doing so, but our town is better today than it was when I started at the City in 2019. We continue to work to attract business and and industry. We know people are needing good paying jobs, but those companies often overlook our area. Southern Illinois Now and our neighboring towns work everyday to recruit those businesses to our area. Progress takes time and it’s often not as visual as our downtown. For those that work in a world similar to mine, push forward, dream big, look for grants and other partners who can share your vision. Developers, like the ones who have made our downtown home in recent years, exist in your town as well, you just have to give them a reason to care, a reason to invest, and a reason to feel pride. Pride is love and when you make redevelopment a feeling, the outcomes are limitless.

In celebration of Halloween, we’re excited to showcase a project completed for MidAmerica St. Louis Airport (BLV). Horner & Shifrin's Environmental & Wetland Scientists conducted a comprehensive Habitat Assessment for the Indiana Bat (IBAT) and a detailed wetland delineation across an approximately 23-acre area at the airport.?The Habitat Assessment aimed to identify suitable habitats for the IBAT within the project area. Our team pinpointed specific trees that serve as potential roosting, foraging, and travel locations on detailed maps. Suitable summer habitats include diverse forested areas and may also encompass adjacent non-forested environments, such as emergent wetlands and the edges of agricultural fields. When suitable trees were identified, they were marked with spray paint for further consideration. We compiled our findings into a thorough summary, complete with supporting documentation, photographs, and maps.?In addition, the Wetland and Waterbody Delineation was conducted to assess existing site conditions and delineate the extent of wetlands and waterbodies within the project limits.?The results from both the bat habitat assessment and the wetland delineation were coordinated with the Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to ensure compliance with permitting requirements.?
