During this season of Thanksgiving, Horizons National CEO, Lorna Smith, shares her gratitude for the many supporters who advance our mission of educational equity. ? Quality out of school time programming is more critical than ever. Because of your generosity, the Horizons Network was able to serve over 7,500 students in 2024 and is looking forward to serving close to 8,000 students in 2025. Thank you for supporting bright futures for all students!

During last week’s National Summer Learning Association, Horizons was honored to be included in U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona’s remarks. Like Secretary Cardona we are filled with hope for a brighter future for all young people and are steadfast in our commitment to provide out of school time programming for youth across the United States. Horizons National is proud to serve as a Summer Learning Champion with the National Summer Learning Association.

Last week, Horizons National’s staff gathered in-person at our headquarters in Westport, CT to celebrate the success of summer 2024 and begin preparing for summer 2025. Although our team may be located in many different time zones, we all share a commitment to educational equity and helping all students thrive. In addition to our work in program design, operations, data evaluation, and fundraising, we learned that many of our team members are chefs! Thank you to A Pinch of Salt for an excellent (and tasty!) cooking class where our individual and team strengths were able to shine!

Over 60% of African-American children, 45% of Hispanic children, and 40% of Caucasian children have no/low swimming ability, putting them at risk for drowning (USA Swimming Foundation, May 2024). At Horizons, swim instruction counters decades of racial, social, and economic discriminatory practices that have limited students like ours from accessing pools and learning to swim. Recently, Horizons Newark’s swimming programming was featured on New York Public Radio’s WNYC 93.9FM. Listen at the link below! https://lnkd.in/gdY-8XEC
