It is inspiring to see mother and daughter, Hannah L. Kilson and Caila Kilson-Kuchtic, featured on WCVB Channel 5 as they prepare to support Horizons as part of our marathon fundraising team made possible by Bank of America and Boston Athletic Association. "We know the success of the child is dependent on the success of the parent," said Tara Spalding, Chief of Advancement and Playspace. We’re excited that Hannah and Caila, this mother-daughter duo, reflect what we see at Horizons everyday - all the good that can come from a strong relationship between parent and child. https://lnkd.in/eJDVBYjM

Can I volunteer even if I work in a full-time position? Yes! Meet Lauren McGrath who has been a volunteer in Horizons’ Playspace program, working a once weekly evening shift for the last two years. During the day she’s a Product Owner at Liberty Mutual Insurance but on Monday evenings she’s a trusted grown-up for young children living in shelter who love to play. Horizons offers many evening volunteer shifts that allow for working professionals to give back after work. Learn more and apply to volunteer today! https://lnkd.in/gJ4gKGht

Last week, a group of Horizons families and staff joined Economic Mobility Pathways - EMPath, 2Life Communities, Mass Alliance of HUD Tenants, Citizens' Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA), The Boston Foundation, Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, Haley House, and First Church of Cambridge at the State House for Cookie Day???, a day of support for the?Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP). ? Following the event, attendees met with legislators and distributed house-shaped cookies, a symbolic (and tasty) reminder of the crucial role MRVP plays in providing safe, stable, and affordable housing for nearly 11,000 low-income households across the Commonwealth. ?

Our thanks to John Bogaert and the many community supporters who contributed to make his local winter sleepout fundraiser for the homeless, 'A Night In The Cold' a success raising $20,000 to support Horizons for Homeless Children. “John’s work to bring awareness to the #homelessness issue is valuable and we’re grateful he’s chosen to focus on family homelessness by supporting Horizons,†said Chief of Advancement and Playspace, Tara Spalding. “Proceeds from this fundraiser will support Horizons' work to mitigate the negative effects of homelessness on children and families across Massachusetts.â€

Horizons celebrated ten parents in our Family Partnerships Program who recently completed a computer course?offered onsite by our partners at JVS?Boston, with funding from PwC Charitable Foundation! ? Computer skills unlock career pathways, expand educational opportunities, and help families navigate online resources as they’re working to move forward toward their goals.?The class curriculum covered basic computer skills such as typing, using the internet, sending email, composing documents, and using a shared platform like Google Classroom. Each participant completed the course with a formatted resume and a Chromebook to take home to build on the basic skills they learned in the course.?The graduation culminated in a ceremony where parents shared breakfast, received their certificates, and picked out a laptop case to bring their new Chromebook home in.??
