I have a new short story out! A while ago, I took part in a thing about imagining future without nuclear weapons, and was later invited to contribute a short story imagining such a world. It's called "Embers", and it's now live as part of Horizon 2045's anthology Far Futures! The way forward against human and planetary risks is TOGETHER. While I work at Horizon 2045 to advance nuclear disarmament, I do it in concert with a coalition of the willing across climate, environment, human rights, and other salient & adjacent issue spaces. In the nearly 30 years since the International Court of Justice issued its advisory opinion on the use and threat of use of nuclear weapons, the laws and norms that constrain the nuclear weapons complex—with a handful of important exceptions—are either frozen in amber or slowly decaying. In stark contrast, laws and norms related to the protection of the environment, climate, human rights, and public health have exploded. Our novel approach to shrink the space in which the nuclear weapons complex can operate legally is an interdisciplinary exercise in borrowing from, replicating, and integrating the legal strategies and tactics of other planetary- level issue spaces, all of which are seeking to address similar human and environmental harms and implicate many of the same rights paradigms—for both present and future generations. It is our stated goal not only to advance the legal constraints and norms around nuclear weapons, but to leverage this process in ways that benefit the efforts of people and organizations working to use law and norms to respond to climate change, fossil fuel extractionism and pollution, human rights abuses, ungoverned AI, and the many more interrelated planetary risks that humanity faces. Research demonstrates that impactful international cooperation to solve for these challenges is stymied by the existence of nuclear weapons. Put simply, it is clear to us, based on the reality of power and geopolitics, behavioral research, and the interconnectedness of the systems that propagate existential threats to people and planet, that in coordination and cooperation, the whole of those working to advance authentic human security can—and must—be far greater than the sum of its parts.
