We develop collaborative processes for learning and leading across existential threats.

关于我们

At Horizon 2045, we develop collaborative processes for learning and leading across existential threats. We're an interdisciplinary team that forged an understanding of the interconnectedness of existential threats by starting out on one of the hardest problem spaces we could find: nuclear weapons. In the process, we learned that many of the behaviors and mental models driving the nuclear weapons systems underpin other entrenched systems as well. We realized that every existential threat we face--from catastrophic climate change to grim biodiversity loss, from nuclear weapons to pandemics, from rising autocracy to uncontrolled Al-requires that we ask ourselves the very same questions about human responsibility, our obligations to the planet and to one another, and our relationship with future generations. ? The processes we've developed to support decision-making in the 'polycrisis' reflect our best answers to those questions. Horizon 2045 is a collaboration between N Square, the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and Rhode Island School of Design’s Center for Complexity and is funded by the Skoll Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

President, Horizon 2045. Investing in new futures for human and planetary security

At the recent Global Philanthropy Forum 2025 Leaders Summit in San Francisco, Morgan Matthews and I led the workshop “Meeting the Moment: Adaptive Philanthropy with a View to the Future.” We introduced the #ForesightRadar as a tool for considering new ways the philanthropic sector might respond to widespread #shockanddisruption. The session, which included nearly 70 funders from North, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, confronted how we collectively failed to adequately anticipate the current crisis. We missed or chose to ignore certain signals based on part on inflexible mental models—including normalcy bias, assumptions about social desirability, and zero-sum thinking—that have in turn dulled a response to the abrupt demolition of longstanding institutions and the gutting of civil society. Participants engaged with Horizon 2045’s Foresight Radar in a process that explored the cascading effects of coinciding changes. The session culminated with critical questions about the future of strategic philanthropy: what types of data would help organizations better understand long-term impacts of current geopolitical moments? What features might a Global Philanthropy Forum "foresight observatory" include?; and how might such a resource might address internal organizational challenges and broader field-wide limitations? Participants expressed keen interest in the proposed observatory as a mechanism to increase coherence across the philanthropic sector and surface tacit knowledge across their portfolios, ultimately enabling grantees to understand alternative ways circumstances could plausibly unfold—all so we can anticipate and prepare for more timely, better coordinated, and more strategic cooperation in the future.

Sincere thanks to Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) for inviting me back to the United Nations this week for a side event to amplify women’s and youth voices, strengthen advocacy across sectors, and address humanitarian and security challenges small arms control & #nucleardisarmament. Horizon 2045 is grounded in integrative approaches that work to solve for multiple risks to people and planet, from #ecocide to #ungovernedAI. The change we seek is a transition to laws, norms, and behaviors that guarantee authentic human security. These aren't just challenges that float around us, they all have kitchen table level effects: secure supply chains, economies that thrive in peacetime; impactful budgets for veterans and education; safe communities; stable infrastructure; insurable homes; internet safety and security; and clean and healthy environments for now and generations to come.

What will it take to reimagine security? This is both the question at the center of our work at Horizon 2045 and the title of our new article in Stanford Social Innovation Review. I was delighted to work with Jenny Johnston, our former Editorial Director (and my favorite writing partner) on this piece, which highlights the extraordinary stressors facing leaders of NGOs and funders alike and offers four ways philanthropy can helpfully respond to safeguard the security of present and future generations alike. https://lnkd.in/g5qaqn8V #Horizon2045 #polycrisis #globalsecurity #foresight #SSIR

President, Horizon 2045. Investing in new futures for human and planetary security

Last week, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, I had the honor of leading an extraordinary dinner conversation alongside Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand—both members of The Elders Foundation—and Emma Belcher, President of Ploughshares. Together, we convened 20 remarkable women leaders working at the intersection of nuclear risk, human rights, climate justice, and international security. The intimacy of the gathering supported the kind of transformative dialogue we desperately need in this moment of converging global challenges. As I facilitated our discussion with my co-hosts, what emerged was a powerful recognition of the interconnectedness of threats. One of our guests put it this way: "In contexts from northern Nigeria to Syria to Yemen, women are dealing with multiple existential threats every single day. What we need is an exchange of empathy and solidarity that can hold multiple perspectives. While nuclear issues are critical, we must address the warning signs that emerge upstream. It's difficult to focus solely on nuclear weapons when communities face immediate existential threats." In other words, women leaders don’t have the luxury of tackling security challenges one at a time. The path ahead requires disrupting traditional nation-centric conceptions of security while building bridges between nuclear policy and other critical challenges. It also became clear that while in the US and Europe very senior, expert women have stepped to the fore, others don't enjoy similar freedom to speak out about their countries’ nuclear weapons policies. This comes as a sober data point given that the #UnitedNationsResolution1325 promised greater participation of women in political and peace building processes, conflict prevention and post-conflict reconstruction when it came into force 25 years ago. As we approach the quarter century milestone for 1325, I'm deeply grateful to my co-hosts and partners at The Elders and Ploughshares for their vision in bringing this powerful group of women security leaders together. I think we all walked away from the evening knowing it was the beginning of something important. #WomenInSecurity #GlobalSecurity #NuclearPolicy #MSC2025 #WomenLeaders #InternationalRelations #SecurityPolicy #MunichSecurityConference #WomenInDiplomacy #MultilateralDialogue

If you're in the Vancouver area check out the immersive art installation, 'the bomb.' We are proud to have supported this initiative since its inception and celebrate the fact that 'the bomb' has been provoking public engagement about the atrocious effects of nuclear weapons for nearly a decade. 'the bomb' will be on exhibit at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, marking its second stop on a global tour of academic institutions. #horizon2045
