Denis Lynch, MDiv, Chaplain, shares about the many ways we care for the whole person in hospice. One special way is our Sea Glass Remembrance Activity, which honors the resilience and transformation of the human spirit: "I believe that because we are spiritual beings in physical bodies, we instinctively need to express our spiritualty in physical ways. That is why hospice offers a holistic approach to care, honoring not only the physical but also the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. I like to include this spirit of inclusivity when remembering lost loved ones of families or care facilities, where I have long used symbols like sea glass or butterflies to help create rituals that resonate deeply with those we serve. (Wherever people have other symbols that speak to them, I like to encompass those also). Sea glass, worn and softened by the sea, embodies resilience and transformation, while butterflies evoke the beauty of change and beautiful fragility of life, and the continuation of the spirit. By choosing these, or other symbols, that speak to the soul and bring peace, we can create moments of remembrance that acknowledge the unique and sacred needs of each individual, while also catering to physical and social/emotional needs. This is the essence of spiritual care—meeting people where they are, with rituals that invite solace, meaning, and connection."
