The mission of Hope Gardens is to bring sustainable, no-till organic gardening practices to neighborhoods and communities that are challenged with finances, growing conditions and time. The organic “covering” method utilized provides a weed-free barrier which minimizes maintenance during the growing season while further enriching the soil for gardening. These environmentally-friendly and regenerative methods enable people to provide for themselves.

Oriole Park families stopped by for a fruit salsa tasting and and a kid friendly cookbook before making their way for a stroll through the school garden finding surprises along the way, like the tiny cucamelon plant weaving its way in the trellis above them, offering the cutest little fruit that looks like a watermelon but tastes like a cucumber. One student was offered a tomato but emphatically remarked that he didn’t like tomatoes but he did like salsa. This took him and his mom on a garden journey to find all of the ingredients to make salsa! #gardening #backtoschool #snapedworks #hopegardensgr https://lnkd.in/gcgF-t9n

We are so grateful to be a part of this beautiful collaboration with H.O.P.E. Gardens, FitKids360, United Church Outreach Ministry (UCOM), and Wyoming Parks and Recreation Department! The Youth Mentor Garden program is an expansion of Grand Rapids-based FitKids360's health and wellness programming, operating out of gardens in Wyoming and Detroit. At the gardens, participating teens and their families work together to plant, weed, water, mulch, and harvest produce. They take the produce home or, at the Wyoming location, share it with United Church Outreach Ministry (UCOM), a garden partner and emergency food pantry serving Marquette Park’s neighborhood. "In the process, we’re growing community," Brunson says. "Gardening touches on mental health, food security, food sovereignty, and nutrition.
