Nearly half of single mom families live in poverty because they are lacking the career skills needed to get a job that leads to economic independence to provide well for their children. Hope for Single Moms has four program pillars to help moms create a brighter future for their families. Education - a post-high school education will double your lifetime earnings Community - we offer a space for grads and clients to share tips, provide support, and have a safe place to share needs and struggles Mentoring- support for each mom is an important component that drives the success of our programs Tribe / Life Assistance - we provide moms with access to a “second family” that they can celebrate with and lean on. Women and children deserve to thrive, not barely survive! Our mission at Hope for Single Moms is to make this happen for women and children; first, in West MI, and second, in the great state of MI. While the attached table is for all women, MI gets a D+ when it the poverty and opportunity composite index. Nearly 90% of women 18 and over live in poverty. When it comes to single moms, that number is about 50%. You can change that and move single mom families out of poverty and into economic independence when you donate money and/or time. Kennedy, who discovered she was pregnant while in college at GRCC, balanced motherhood with her studies, delaying college to spend time with her newborn son Knox. Advancing Equity in Attainment for Black Single Moms in College: There is a resounding need for affordable and accessible child care. But even when it is available during regular work and school hours, Black single mother students struggle with finding it when needed at other necessary times (e.g., those who take online classes may be required to take an in-person test, clinicals that start at an early hour or finish at an evening hour, daycare/school closures, etc.) Institutional support, and supportive faculty and staff in particular, is key to Black single mother students’ success and is essential for them to thrive academically and personally. Black single mothers want to present themselves as confident in their ability to overcome challenges and emphasize self-sufficiency as they feel consistent pressure to be superhuman. Black single mothers seek social, emotional, and mental health support. For them, the mental and emotional toll of attaining a college degree is compounded by the structural inequities and microaggressions they often experience due to their intersectional identities, including gender, race, and parenting status. The impact of financial issues is far-reaching for Black single mothers as financial issues make it difficult for them to stay enrolled and complete their education. Because of Hope for Single Moms, Grace has graduated with full honors from Ferris State University with a Bachelors in Healthcare Administration. She graduated with minimal debt, a 4.0 and landed her dream job. Even more than that, she has an incredible bond with her kids because she was able to stay home with them while pursuing her degree.
