Thank you to Kaitlin Washburn and Association of Health Care Journalists for lifting up the important report from the USD School of Law - Children's Advocacy Institute (funded by Hope and Heal Fund) that pulls together several different studies to define the connection between child abuse, firearm violence and suicidality. A major finding of the report is the connection to domestic violence. One study highlighted in the report found a “consistent and significant” relationship between witnessing domestic violence and later committing gun violence. Thank you to the Association of Health Care Journalists for featuring the Hope and Heal-funded messaging guide for advocates working to reframe narratives on firearm violence and suicide. The messaging guide created by Berkeley Media Studies Group is a critical tool to help community leaders tell the stories of their own communities and to focus on local solutions. The guide is also designed to help journalists to highlight positive and solution-based strategies in communities across California and the country. https://lnkd.in/guBErBGX

While public mass shootings are incredibly tragic, we must also remember children are more likely to die in mass shootings at home than at school. We know that domestic violence plays a big role in these tragedies and more needs to be done to protect those most vulnerable. This starts with getting accurate and timely local firearm homicide data due to intimate partner violence (IPV) so local organizations can design better prevention and intervention tools. This stat from the Stanford study sums it up: "59% of children who died in these mass shootings were killed by a family member — most often a parent." We can and must do better and this is why the intersection of domestic violence and firearms is a big part of what Hope and Heal Fund is focused on. https://lnkd.in/g_vVJuCh

Today, we remember the 26 lives tragically cut short at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. This devastating event, which claimed the lives of 20 young children and six educators, remains one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. The grief of that day echoes through the years, but it also reminds us of the urgent need to continue our work to prevent gun violence and support communities in healing. https://lnkd.in/gBNFYrQR
