关于我们
Hood Design Studio, Inc., is a social art and design practice based in Oakland, California, founded in 1992. The studio’s practice is tripartite: art + fabrication, design + landscape, and research + urbanism. This breadth allows us to understand each place in its scale and context. We respond not with a standard design, but with an approach adaptive to the particulars and specifics of a space. We strengthen endemic patterns and practices—those ecological and cultural, contemporary and historic, and those that remain unseen or unrecognized. Urban spaces and their objects act as public sculpture, creating new apertures through which to see the emergent beauty, strangeness, and idiosyncrasies around us.

? Huge thank you to elledecor for featuring The African Ancestors Garden: History and Memory at the International African American Museum in their Best New Fall Coffee Table Book List! We’re honored to be included amongst such inspiring works, and we can’t wait for the release on December 10. About the book: The African Ancestors Garden?is the first book to be published in conjunction with the International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, South Carolina. The museum’s landscape design exemplifies the museum’s mission to reflect on its location at Gadsden’s Wharf, the point at which nearly half of all enslaved Africans arrived in North America. With contributions by figures critical to the realization of the International African American Museum, this significant book presents the intensive site research and concepts that went into the distinct spaces at the museum, including an infinity reflecting pool and an ethnobotanical showcase of African plants brought to North America though that landing. Hood’s design response to these historic grounds addresses memory, tragedy, and culture, a moving homage to the living Charleston community and the African diaspora at large. HOOD Design Studio is thrilled to announce that Walter has been honored as the 2024 recipient of National Building Museum's Vincent Scully Prize. Established in 1999, the Scully Prize recognizes excellence in practice, scholarship, or criticism in architecture, historic preservation, and urban design. Walter now joins an esteemed list of past recipients including: Theaster Gates, Dolores Hayden, Mabel O. Wilson, and Elizabeth Meyer. The?Vincent Scully Prize?recipient is selected by a distinguished jury, including members?Esther da Costa Meyer, Nancy Levinson,?Stephen Luoni,?Toshiko Mori,?and led by chair?Paul Goldberger. The Prize Jury remarks that, “Hood focuses particularly on urban public space, and unlike many of his peers in landscape design, he makes a point of working at both the scale of large, public projects such as the De Young Museum in San Francisco and the Broad Museum in Los Angeles, and the intimate scale of community-based neighborhood projects. His recent work at the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, has been particularly admired. We were mindful of Vincent Scully’s own history as a scholar who took pride in being an activist on social and political issues.” Join us at the public celebration on October 4, 6pm-9pm.
