Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) takes place annually on November 20. This important occasion pays tribute to transgender individuals who have sadly fallen victim to anti-transgender violence. TDOR serves to honor the memories of those who have passed while also recognizing the remarkable resilience and strength of the transgender community. It underscores the persistent struggle for equality and justice, emphasizing the critical need for ongoing support and advocacy for transgender rights and acknowledgment.

November marks Native American Heritage Month, an important period dedicated to honoring and celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous peoples in our country. This month serves not only as a time of observance but also as a crucial opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions Native Americans have made throughout history. By engaging with this occasion, we can cultivate a greater understanding and respect for their vibrant heritage. Let’s come together to educate ourselves, uplift Indigenous voices, and make a lasting commitment to valuing these important narratives today and every day.

Filipino American History Month (FAHM) commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinxs in the continental U.S. in October 1587. ? As the third-largest AAPI group in both the U.S. and Michigan, Filipinx Americans have shaped and enriched this nation over generations through their contributions in many sectors, including agriculture, education, hospitality, manufacturing, healthcare, and community in general.? ? We celebrate the vibrant Filipinx community. This year’s theme, set by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), is Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience. Our Filipinx community here at Honor Community Health is represented by Dr. Jason Ramos; Victoria Sollestre, MPAS, PA-C; Migel Dalusung, PA-C; and Dr. Jason Caluducan.? ? ? ? Ipinagdiriwang natin ang masiglang komunidad ng Filipinx. Ang tema ngayong taon, na itinakda ng Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), ay Pakikibaka, Paglaban, Pagkakaisa, at Katatagan. Ang ating komunidad ng mga Filipinx dito sa Honor Community Health ay kinakatawan ni Dr. Jason Ramos; Victoria Sollestre, MPAS, PA-C; Migel Dalusung, PA-C; at Dr. Jason Caluducan. ?

October is Polish-American Heritage Month: a special time to reflect on our cultural roots and the values that shape who we are. We take pride in our Polish roots, cherishing the traditions, language, and resilience that have been passed down through generations.? ? Please meet Dr. Klejno! Dr. Klejno was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States when she was six years old. Her parents taught her the importance of upholding her Polish heritage while she was in the United States. She attended Polish School, joined her college’s Polish Student Alliance, and even returned to Poland to attend Poznan University of Medical Sciences.? ? Dr. Klejno is a Family Medicine Physician at Honor Community Health, where she leverages her Polish heritage. Her unique perspective as a Polish immigrant allows her to appreciate her patient’s cultures and unique identities. She values her work at Honor Community Health because it aligns with her dedication to providing compassionate care and fostering an inclusive environment for everyone. ? Please meet Bo Sekulska! Bo Sekulska was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States with her husband and two children 23 years ago. Her husband, an engineer, accepted a job in the US, and they both thought that this was an excellent opportunity for their adventurous family. She finished University in Poland with a degree in Economics and Marketing, but that was not her calling in the United States. After her youngest son was born 21 years ago, a few years later, she came back to school and finished Carnegie Institute as a Medical Assistant. She started working for Honor Community Health more than 12 years ago in various positions, from Medical Assistant to Director of Health Center Operation to Administrator of the Residency Program, helping new resident doctors develop their skills and care for our patients. ? Her primary focus is to promote a healthy lifestyle and women's health, especially mammogram screening, as she is a 5-year survivor of breast cancer stage 3. She organizes 4 times per year mammogram screening for uninsured women. Helping Honor patients in any capacity is the most rewarding aspect of her work. ?

Yesterday we started the conversation with All Medicaid Health Plans during our Health Plan Breakfast at Honor’s Summit location. And it was a huge success! We discussed the history of Honor and the programs and services we provide to our patients and the community. We also talked about initiatives to help close gaps in care. We also discussed all of the benefits about being a Honor patient. There were a lot of great questions. An open dialogue about the challenges we face as a FQHC and the challenges they face being on the opposite end. And most importantly how we can move forward and support each other with our end, result supporting our patients. We are so excited for what this conversation started and we look forward to the next steps for our patients
