Twas the Night Before TV Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the lot, Not a director was stirring, not even a jot. The proposals were hung in the office with care, In hopes that commissions soon would be there. The runners were nestled all snug in their chairs, Dreaming of credits and climbing the stairs. The development room empty, no formats left to fight, With notes from the network tucked out of sight. When out in the edit, there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter. Away to the production office, I flew like a flash, Hoping the showrunner hadn’t made a mad dash. The monitors flickered with half-edited scenes, While producers were glued to their caffeine machines. When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a grizzled old exec with no sense of fear. With a little black notepad and critique so slick, I knew in a moment it was The Ratings Saint Nick. More rapid than cutaways, his insults they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "More drama, more conflict, a twist we don't see! Cut the budget in half, but make it look more like three! Get that contributor off-screen, they’re ruining the show! And why in the world is the pacing so slow?!" He chewed through the show bible, he slashed at the plot, And gave notes that made sense (well, some of them not). Then turning on heels, a script he did toss, Grumbling, “Fix this by Monday, or it's going to cost” The editors winced, the showrunners sighed, But onward they worked, their hopes slowly died. Yet I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight, “Happy ratings to all—and may your pilot take flight!
