In March, Nissan Motor Corporation and Honda began a feasibility study looking into forming a strategic partnership in the fields of vehicle electrification and intelligence. Today, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe and I gave an update on our progress in Tokyo. We’ve agreed that #Nissan and #Honda will carry out joint research in fundamental technologies in platforms for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Both our companies also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on deepening the framework of the strategic partnership in areas including batteries, e-Axles, energy services and resource circulation in Japan, and supplementing each other’s model offerings (For details, see here: https://lnkd.in/gYGhraxc). While Nissan and Honda have different company cultures, we discovered our people shared a common perception of the challenges we face at a time of rapid change in the automotive industry. I’d like to thank Mibe-san and his team for the way they’ve approached the discussions. Both our companies are talking to each with a spirit of mutual trust and respect. Teams in Nissan and Honda are excited about the possibilities of this potential collaboration, with the benefits greater than expected. Finally, I’m also happy to announce that, as of today, a new party is joining our discussions: Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. By entering a three-party collaborative framework comprising Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi Motors, we can create new value by combining respective strengths, further enhancing efficiencies and synergies. We look forward to working closely with CEO Takao Kato and the Mitsubishi Motors team.
