The Prairie Dawgs are back with another episode of This Ol’ Prairie! The Grant Creek?#restoration?project at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is supported by an America the Beautiful Challenge grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation?awarded to?Openlands and?The Wetlands Initiative. Ultimately, this area will be transformed into healthy?#prairie,?#savanna, and floodplain?#wetland habitats. But the first step is one that sometimes surprises people: removing trees. ? Restoring prairie and wetlands is a multi-step process, and one of the most critical early steps is clearing trees and shrubs to create a clean slate for seeding and planting native species. Here, you can see our contractor, Homer Tree Service, using a forestry mulcher to grind smaller shrubs into mulch. This machine is equipped with a rotating drum lined with sharp teeth that shred woody vegetation into small pieces. The mulch left behind helps reduce soil erosion and adds organic material back into the ground. For larger shrubs and trees, a feller buncher is brought in. This powerful machine is designed to hold, cut, and stack trees. It features a high-speed circular saw at the base of four hydraulic arms, which grip the trunk as it’s cut, preventing it from falling unpredictably. The operator then places the cut trees into neat piles, making collection and removal much easier. This process allows us to clear the land methodically while minimizing disturbance to the soil. We often get asked why we remove trees at all. Most of the trees and shrubs are invasive species, and nothing that is removed belongs on a prairie. While it may look empty now, we hope that in just a few years, this landscape will be teeming with native prairie plants, creating a healthier and more resilient?#ecosystem. Stick around to see how we restore This Ol’ Prairie! Homer Companies USDA Forest Service
