On behalf of all of HCANYS and the home health community of New York State, it is with the heaviest of hearts, but with unquantifiable appreciation for this man, his life, and legacy, that HCANYS shares the difficult news of the passing of the Honorable Tarky Lombardi, Jr. at his home Sunday evening. There has been no greater force for the home health field in New York State and across the country than Tarky Lombardi. Fifty years ago, he laid the modern foundation for this field with a vision for care at home for all those in need, from children to centenarians, and he had a special vision to enable individuals to choose to receive long-term care not in a nursing home, but in their own home – a Nursing Home Without Walls – known nationwide as “The Lombardi Program.” HCANYS has always claimed a special relationship to this man, this visionary, this lawmaker, this community servant. To HCANYS, he has always been “our very own Senator Lombardi.” Senator Lombardi is a person of monumental proportions. There are many standout moments in Maria Giannino's career that make her believe she’s in the right profession and that have developed her into who she is today. She remembers a time when she was taking care of a child in end-of-life care. She sat with the child and his mother for most of the day and evening. “Just being able to be with her and him to help things go smoothly, I think that was a part that really said, ‘This is where you need to be,’” Giannino of Nascentia Health said. “That was many years ago, and she just kept telling me how much I was her angel. But in reality, it was them that gave me the insight that this is where my life belongs—in homecare, helping others.” https://lnkd.in/dJnt8Cs7
