This Black History Month, we’re celebrating pioneers who shaped our nation’s infrastructure, transportation, and communities. These leaders broke barriers, advanced equity, and left a lasting impact on the built environment we navigate every day.   Today, we recognize Robert C. Weaver, a trailblazer in urban development and housing policy. As the first U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), he led efforts to expand affordable housing and improve urban communities. His influence began long before that—he drafted the U.S. Housing Program in 1937, became New York’s first Black State Cabinet member in 1955, and continued shaping housing policy at the national level from 1966 to 1968. His work laid the foundation for fair and accessible housing across the country.
