The latest article in our 100 McAllister series, linked below, focuses on structural and seismic upgrades to the existing building, which has been the starting point and driving force for this project to date. As we see California's resilience tested by natural disasters and climate events with increasing frequency, we must prioritize proactive strategies to build resilience and limit risk before avoidable damage occurs. The risk of a disastrous seismic event in the Bay Area is a real possibility that we live with daily; seismic retrofits that meet applicable standards for use and location are a crucial step towards protecting existing buildings and the communities they serve. Site update from Newport, Oregon! The Holmes US team headed out to the coast last week to support the lifting of the historic lantern from the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. Originally constructed 1871, this Lighthouse is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport, Oregon as well as being the only existing lighthouse with attached living quarters in the state. While it only served as a lighthouse for a few years before Yaquina Head Lighthouse came into service, it has lived on as a prominent site in Newport and coastal Oregon’s history. On site, the team assessed the sensitive existing condition of both the lantern and anchor structure, battered and corroded by decades of marine weather, to ensure that both could be separated and unharmed in the impressive feat of crane operation. The lantern is now being transported to a rehabilitation facility to fully restore it to its former glory before being reunited with the rest of the structure later this year. It took a team effort to send this piece of history safely on its way! Closing out our 2024 Award Recap with the project of the fallen redwoods! A jury of five reviewed more than 183 design award submissions, and Studio Schicketanz’s, historic Big Sur Cabin took home the AIA 2024 Design Citation Award. Holmes contributed to the structural engineering of the cabin. The award framework measured the project under the following design metrics: integration, equitable communities, ecosystems, water, economy, energy, well-being, resources, change and discovery. Contributing to a more sustainable future, the designed lifespan of the historic cabin is 80 years with a mixed structural system consisting of steel, concrete and wood framing. The design has considered the impact of climatic change over the building’s lifespan as the project consisted of reclaimed redwood locally milled and fabricated into siding, wall paneling and cabinetry.
