Preventing veteran suicide remains the paramount clinical priority within the Department of Veterans Affairs, and throughout my tenure at VA, I've dedicated a substantial portion of my efforts to this critical issue. Despite the unwavering focus and significant investment of resources, progress has been slow and the challenges immense. The most recent data from the VA revealing an 11.6% increase in the rate of veteran suicide is deeply distressing and underscores the urgency of the mission. After many sleepless nights grappling with this issue, I've decided to share my observations on what appears to be working and what is not. Additionally, I've outlined 15 recommendations that I believe are essential to significantly reducing these avoidable tragedies.
