Take a look at the innovative design behind Canada’s Advanced Material Manufacturing Centre. HOK, Architecture49 Inc. and WSP collaborated to deliver this first built project of the Laboratories Canada program, which aims to place Canada at the forefront of breakthrough research and cutting-edge discoveries, driving economic growth and innovation. A key aspect of the project is its emphasis on flexible lab and administrative space design. Lab areas are configured with modularity in mind, allowing for horizontal expansion. Demountable walls offer the flexibility for labs to seamlessly expand. A custom-designed lab solution integrates wall systems and overhead service carriers to facilitate plug-and-play reconfiguration of lab casework. Ceiling service panels enable complete reconfiguration of lab casework without disrupting electrical or plumbing services, ensuring adaptability to evolving research needs. “The design for this project was not just about designing the building, it was about creating an environment where science can thrive,” says HOK Senior Laboratory Planner Shrey Chandra, AIA, LEED AP. The more than 2.8 million-sq.-ft. project includes 22 international gates in Concourse Tier 2 in its first phase, a federal inspection services facility (FIS) and a new Concourse Tier 3. HOK’s design will prioritize passenger comfort, sustainability and operational efficiency, incorporating thoughtful lighting, acoustics and materials to create a calming and welcoming environment. We’re thrilled for the latest project milestones on the Monterey Regional Airport’s new five-gate terminal! The airport has selected Hensel Phelps to build the replacement passenger terminal for its MRY Metamorphosis program. Designed by HOK, the new passenger terminal will showcase Monterey’s local beauty, with a pre-security garden plaza featuring lush, native landscaping. A sleek, central lounge post-security includes floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the garden plaza and provide abundant natural light for travelers. The new terminal project is targeting LEED Platinum certification and net-zero energy readiness. Congratulations to Thomas Bayer, FAIA, on being elevated to The American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows! As technical principal in our Houston studio, Tom leads technical direction for projects across Texas and the Gulf Coast. Modern, sleek and dynamic—Roig Arena is set to redefine Valencia’s entertainment landscape. Opening this year, the 20,000 person multipurpose venue will be the city’s premier destination for music, arts, culture and sports, serving as the home of the men’s and women’s Valencia Basket Club teams. Beyond the arena, the project will revitalize the surrounding neighborhood with a nearly five-acre public park and new facilities for the local Les Arts school. Developed by LICAMPA 1617, an enterprise founded by Spanish entrepreneur Juan Roig, the arena is designed in collaboration between HOK and ERRE. Renderings by Drawfield Studio.

Using data-driven methods, she helps project teams achieve ambitious carbon reduction goals while meeting strict budget requirements.? “Our responsibility is to create resilient buildings that serve people through integrated systems, smart material choices and relentless attention to detail—all while dramatically reducing carbon impact,” says Francesca. “When we succeed, the solutions appear effortless.” Originally from the East Coast, Francesca spent the past 11 years based in California where she recently completed a term as president of AIA San Francisco.
