Empty and half-filled office towers threaten the health and vitality of urban centers. The most common solution is to convert these buildings into residential use. Yet not all office towers are good candidates for residential conversion. Could those buildings be adapted for something entirely new and novel? That’s what a team of designers and engineers in our San Francisco office recently explored. Their study examined: - ?? On-site data servers (to speed innovation and computing) for the next wave of AI technology - ?? Energy harvesting to nourish incorporated agriculture - ??? “Officetel” live-work units to nurture startup culture and draw new businesses and population into downtown office districts. ?? We are proud to share that the Centre Block Rehabilitation in Ottawa received the Award of Excellence for Best Future Project by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats! HOK's Jonathan Zee, Michelle Ludik and Stefan Abidin (below, left to right) were on hand in London last month to receive the award at CTBUH's 2024 Conference. The HOK/WSP joint venture CENTRUS is leading the rehabilitation of the century-old Centre Block, the historic and future seat of the Canadian Parliament. The project is upgrading the building to meet the needs of a modern government and includes a new underground Parliament Welcome Centre. The design respects and honors the site’s past, while setting new benchmarks for a sustainable reuse of historic assets in the built environment. We’re excited to team with S9 Architecture and Somera Road to revitalize Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms neighborhood, which is highlighted in the article. The project includes a six-block, 26-acre site with renovation and new construction. It will transform West Bottoms into a vibrant mixed-use district with apartments, retail, offices, a boutique hotel and open public spaces. HOK has teamed with Airspeeder, the world’s first crewed flying car racing series, to design a revolutionary modular vertiport and private event space for eVTOL racing. ? At the heart of the vertiport design is the Skydeck, which serves as a hub for race operations and an exclusive spectator space. Positioned directly beneath the airborne racetrack, fans can view the grid, race start and finish line directly above them, creating a 360° immersive experience. With equity and inclusion at the forefront of global conversations, HOK is taking decisive action to embed these values into the built environment. HOK’s Designing for Equity Toolkit represents a meaningful step toward creating spaces that serve everyone, regardless of their background or abilities. The toolkit, available to all HOK design teams, offers a roadmap for creating inclusive, community-focused spaces. Standards and best practices found in the toolkit are grounded in five core design principles: 1. Partnering with the community 2. Planning for inclusion 3. Providing equity of experience 4. Promoting health and well-being 5. Championing environmental justice As part of the HOK project process checklist, the toolkit provides a guide for each milestone, outlining goals, responsibilities and available resources. Over the past year, HOK design teams tested the Designing for Equity Toolkit in the planning and design for projects including AstraZeneca’s new research and development center under development in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and New York City Football Club’s future stadium in Queens. What if…we communicated through curiosity and play? For the 2024 Seattle Design Festival, HOK created an immersive and interactive art installation that sparks joy and uses unconventional materials based on this prompt. From a distance, visitors are drawn in by the gleaming, dynamic fabrics set behind the biophilic and cardboard fa?ade, inviting them to engage with the vibrant materials. Inside, the sequin fabrics act as a canvas and shape the interior space, encouraging everyone to interact and leave their mark. Plants from the exterior fa?ade were given to the community to foster a sense of connection and shared experience. HOK partnered with Hoffman Construction Company, DCI Engineers, Architectural Elements and Olympic CNC on this installation.
