Hohonu helps communities adapt to climate change through providing accessible environmental water data

Hohonu provides precision monitoring and forecasting to help communities prepare for and respond to flooding. It uses the latest technologies in hardware, software, and data science in order to deliver reliable and accessible water level data to its customers. "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it." The same principles its team used in the restoration of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond in He'eia fishpond, located in Kane'ohe Bay on the island of O'ahu, can be used to help aid in humanity's fight against climate change.

    Had a blast and learned lots at the NOAA 2024 Coastal Inundation Community of Practice Workshop in Seattle. On Tuesday, I shared that we were predicting a 98% chance for ~1-2 feet of flooding at our Tenean Beach, Boston, site during yesterday's King Tide. How did we do? Not so bad ;-)

    11 Hohonu #tide and #flood sensors were deployed across 600 square miles in Lee County, which allowed for real-time tracking of #storm #surge and flooding during Hurricanes Helene and Milton. These #sensors recorded over 5 feet of storm surge across the area - data that had previously largely relied on sparse data, pictures, or anecdotal evidence. With this real-time data, emergency responders can make better-informed decisions, knowing precisely how much water covered roads and properties. This #data will significantly aid future flood #predictions, particularly in areas like St. James City on Pine Island, Florida. Between Hurricanes Milton and Helene substantial new data was collected, allowing for a clearer understanding of how future storms may impact specific regions based on factors like wind speed, precipitation, and storm surge.     People often ask me about longevity and durability of lower-cost sensor packages that we deploy. During Hurricane Milton, our sensor on the Matlacha Bridge in Lee County, FL not only survived, but also kept telemetering 1-minute average water level data in near-real-time during a direct hit from a tornado. We don't claim they're all tornado or hurricane rated, but we've been at this for a while ;-) and more importantly, the value of having a distributed network of lower cost sensors deployed shines through not only in accessing better spatial variability, but also in redundancy of multiple sensor types.

    How often is a #critical access road flooded? For how long? And how does this impact #response from the local fire department in the case of #emergency? In partnership with Woods Hole Group, Inc. and the Yarmouth Fire Department, Hohonu has been helping to answer these questions for Great Island Homeowner's Association, a community group located in Yarmouth, #Massachusetts. It was believed that the Great Island road flooded a few times per year, but Hohonu revealed it flooded 50 times during the first 6-months of installing a #flood #sensor. Often, flooding occurred at night when no one was around to witness it.     The Climate Resilience Network unifies the expertise of University of Maryland – College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, University of Maryland scientists with the immediate requirements of Maryland’s decision-makers to address the complexities of climate change. Working alongside stakeholders, researchers from this Grand Challenges Institutional Grant can assess regional needs and find innovative solutions rooted in both the real demands of the community as well as University of Maryland's groundbreaking research.     We are wishing for safety for all of those impacted by #Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton. A month ago, Lee County Emergency Management began deploying Hohonu sensors throughout the county in anticipation of a hurricane event. Hurricane Helene, and now Milton, have since then devastated the Florida coastline. Hohonu sensors deployed at sites like New Pass Bridge recorded extreme #storm #surge in both events, and others like Matlacha Bridge yesterday survived a direct hit from a #tornado. Not all of our sensors survived, but many have. We hope this data can be used to better inform decisions in real-time, as well as for future events. Disclaimer: The image shown references data in the NAVD88 datum. This data will soon be converted to MHHW, the datum typically used for flooding events, as soon as each respective monitoring location has been installed for at least 35 days.

    NOAA does an amazing job with the resources it has, but with only one federal tide gauge serving Lee County, FL, Hohonu worked with County Emergency Management to deploy 11 new gauges in recent weeks. The network captured peak water levels and inundation over roadways in real time during Helene, and are poised to help during Milton, too. Data are public in real-time at dashboard.hohonu.io and TideCast for iOS (all gauges are surveyed in to NAVD88 and additional datums will be made available later in October).
