During Black History Month, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of Sergeant Henry Johnson, a Harlem Hellfighter whose heroic actions in World War I earned him the nickname "Black Death." Despite facing discrimination at home, Sgt. Johnson fearlessly defended his fellow soldiers in battle, single-handedly fighting off a German raid in 1918. He was wounded 21 times but never backed down. His courage earned him the French Croix de Guerre with Palm, and nearly a century later, the Medal of Honor. His story is a testament to the resilience, dedication, and valor of Black service members throughout history. We honor his legacy and the countless others who have served with distinction.
