I Help the C-Suite of Large Organizations Navigate Times of Major Transformation: Executive and Team Coach | Fractional/Interim COO & CHRO | Change Management Leader | M&A Integration Leader | Culture Catalyst

On this No Filter Friday, I want to talk about bankruptcy.... ...and I don't mean bankruptcy in the traditional sense. I mean internal bankruptcy. Where you have ignored the truth, your values and purpose in pursuit of external rewards....title, ego, attention, wealth, status and in exchange, you (and others around you) no longer recognize you. You've changed. And, not in a good way. Here are some examples: - You walk back on a promise made - You lie under oath - You fail to advocate for someone who you know you should - Your goals no longer align to the mission of your work or your life - You no longer honor your values if it means compromising your external wealth You can tell yourself that 'it was just a little lie,' but like a sinkhole, it tends to expand. Leaving a void in its place. And no, external wealth does not make it feel better. So the next time you're put into the position of doing what benefits you in exchange for doing what is right, you've made a deal with the devil. Remember: Your external wealth will never exceed your internal wealth. By focusing on inner abundance and honoring who you are, external success naturally follows - not the other way around.

It's easy to fall into this trap by telling ourselves 'I can't move forward' based on what is in front of me.... When I work with my coaching clients, what I find is that we can unconsciously put up the barriers. We can't see past a limitation or obstacle in front of us so therefore we don't continue. We talk ourselves out of it. We stop chasing that dream or goal. Like these sheep, we focus on the limitation or obstacle. But what if we shifted our thinking? - What is possible? - What would be a clever way of advancing this goal? - What options or approaches have you seen work for other people? - What makes you think or believe that? (obstacle) I find my clients have all of the answers. But as is the case for all of us, we're just too close to it to see it. That's where a coach can help get you unstuck and get past the fear. Because what you may be missing out on could be greener grass.... Ready to make 2025 your year?

Let's set the scene: you're an executive in need of some leadership advice. In consulting your peers, you get several recommendations. "Hire a consultant," one person says. "Start working with a coach! I love working with mine," says another. "Check in with a mentor. You have a mentor, right?" another chimes in. Working with consultants, coaches, and mentors are a great way to solve challenges and move forward. But what's the difference in these roles, and how do you know when it makes sense to work with one over the other? We've got you covered in this blog post. *Link to blog in comments #Mentoring #Coaching #Consulting

  • Often times, we move slowly in life, unaware of what is holding us back. We think "Next year will be better." or "I'll make time for that once I'm caught up." The reality is, you're controlling your pace and in some situations, the anchor is you. Maybe it's fear, maybe it's reluctance, or maybe you just don't think you're ready. Want to know what helps? Having someone to talk through it with you. Ready to get unstuck? #coaching #professionaldevelopment #leadershipcoaching

  • It's tough to draw out someone's true behaviors when interviewing. They're usually not so forthcoming as this dog. If I am interviewing a leader, one of my go to questions is - Tell me about a time an initiative you introduced failed. (and I wait for the answer) Next questions: - When did you realize it wasn't going well? (are they intuitive and close to the key details?) - What was happening? (did they observe it or did someone tell them?) - Who did you talk to about it? (who do they seek out for guidance and support) - Then what? (digging deeper) - Then what happened? (oh, there is still more there) - What would you do differently next time? (what do they focus on here for the changes? the planning stage or the project stage? Do they blame others? Would they change their role/involvement?) - If I called your manager, what would they say about this? (were they telling me the truth or do they now get a little uneasy?) What would the Project Lead say about this? Sometimes you have to go off script and ask follow up questions based on what you're hearing from the interviewee. But never settle for their first response. The more you dig, the more it becomes clear what was happening and how they handle themselves. Do they have a growth mindset, where they're not afraid to share lessons learned? Or instead do they minimize the impact or the failed project - burying it or hiding behind others? What are some of your go to interview questions when interviewing leaders? #recruitment #talentacquisition #interviews?

  • What advice would I give my 17 year old self? First of all, keep this energy, right here, as you did when you graduated high school. Then, people are going to say to you: Talk more Talk less Be assertive Be less assertive Be ambitious Be less ambitious Smile more Be more serious I wish I were kidding. Don't listen to them. Keep this ENERGY, right here. Because you have always been a force. This is who you are, naturally. And you're perfect. You have a kind heart and a generous soul. Who said we have to grow up to be anything other than ourselves? We don't have to fit someone else's narrative. We have to find our home, where we can be ourselves and thrive. Who were you when you were 17? Would 17 year old you recognize who you are today? #lookback #advice #kickass #energy

  • What does it mean to be a leader and take action in the middle of a crisis and how does that create loyalty? I don't have to tell you that if you were a leader at a company during the pandemic, it was a scary, uncertain time. I had to quickly understand what the pandemic meant for our company and employees, while we were also trying to coach our own clients and community through it the best we could. As a leader in the organization, I learned three actions were important above all else: 1?? When in doubt, go with your gut—especially in a situation that is completely new. 2?? Protect your people. It was essential that we keep a degree of normalcy while doing as much as we could to acknowledge that it was a strange and uncertain time. 3?? Make everything as simple as possible. We brought the business down to the essentials and worked hard to not complicate things. The pandemic taught me that crisis in leadership is a lot like sheltering—a lesson that I work on with my executive coaching clients today. When you're able to provide that shelter from the storm and be a buffer, that's when you create loyalty. #Leadership #ExecutiveLeadership #CrisisLeadership

“Piglet” said Pooh. “Yes,” said Piglet. “I’m scared,” said Pooh. For a moment there was silence. “Would you like to talk about it,” asked Piglet, when Pooh didn’t appear to be saying anything further. “I’m just so scared,” blurted out Pooh, “so anxious, because I don’t feel like things are getting any better. If anything, I feel like they might be getting worse. People are angry because they are so scared and they’re turning on one another and there seems to be no clear plan out of here and I worry about my friends and the people I love and I wish so much that I could give them all a hug. And, oh, Piglet, I am so scared and I cannot tell you how much I wish it wasn’t.” So Piglet was thoughtful as he looked out at the blue of the skies, peeping between the branches of the trees in the hundred acre wood and listened to his friend. “I’m here.” He said simply. “I hear you, Pooh, and I’m here.” For a moment Pooh was perplexed. “But aren’t you going to tell me not to be so silly that I should stop getting myself into a state and pull myself together that it’s hard for everyone right now?” “No,” said Piglet quite decisively. “No, I am very much not going to do any of those things.” “But,” said Pooh, “I can’t change the world right now,” continued Piglet. “And I’m not going to patronize you with platitudes about how everything will be okay, because I don’t know that. What I can do, though, Pooh, is, I can make sure that you know that I am here and that I will always be here to listen and to support you and for you to know that you are heard. I can’t make those anxious feelings go away, not really, but I can promise you that all the time I have breath left in my body, you won’t ever need to feel those anxious feelings alone.” And it was a strange thing because, even as Piglet said that Pooh could feel some of those anxious feelings start to loosen their grip on him, could feel one or two of them start to slither away into the forest, cowed by his friend who sat there solidly next to him. Pooh thought he had never been more grateful to have Piglet in his life. - The World of Pooh by A.A. Milne ------------------ For half of the country, it has been a difficult week. I see people saying 'move on.' That isn't helpful. If anyone needs someone who will listen to them, I am here for you. I am opening time on my calendar tomorrow for whomever may need it, on me. I see you. I can't fix it. But I can hold a safe space for you to process. Please reach out. - Jennifer
