We're excited to announce our partnership with mindfulness expert Anusha Wijeyakumar for our newest series, Mindfulness Minute ?? Anusha is the Wellness Consultant for Hoag Hospital, where she leads integrative medicine and mindfulness programs across various departments, including maternal mental health and cancer prevention. She pioneered the hospital's first meditation program for clinical research. As we prepare for the holiday season, Anusha encourages us to dedicate a few minutes each day to reflect on what we're grateful for—whether it's the people in our lives, our work, or simple, joyful moments. Research shows that gratitude practices improve mental well-being by helping us shift our focus from daily stressors and endless to-do lists toward the positives in our lives.

Managing diabetes during the holidays is entirely possible while still enjoying the festivities. With proper planning and smart choices, you can fully participate in seasonal celebrations while keeping your blood sugar levels stable. "The key to enjoying the holidays with diabetes is preparation and moderation. By planning ahead and making smart choices, you can savor the flavors of the season while keeping your blood sugar in check," said Meghan Gonzalez, RD, CDCES, Diabetes Dietitian Educator at Hoag's Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center. To maintain healthy blood sugar levels, Gonzalez advises eating nutritious meals before gatherings and having light snacks before events. She also recommends reducing sugar in recipes, being mindful of appetizer portions, and contributing diabetes-friendly options like veggie platters to holiday gatherings.

Is socializing with friends as beneficial as hitting the gym? When it comes to brain health, research suggests it is. In fact, maintaining social connections can reduce one's risk of cognitive decline and dementia. On the flip side, studies have shown that social isolation and loneliness can be as detrimental to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. “People who report being lonely have a higher risk of developing dementia – to almost the same degree as genetics plays a role,” said Aaron Ritter, M.D., the Larkin Family Endowed Chair in Integrative Brain Health and director of the Memory & Cognitive Disorders Program at Hoag’s Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute. “It’s a remarkable correlation that underscores the importance of social connections to our brain health and overall well-being.”
