The World Health Organization reports that smoking is the leading cause of preventable death globally, claiming up to 8 million lives each year—more than wars and conflicts. Yet, the emotional impact of anti-smoking campaigns has been under-researched until now. New research from HKS Professor Jennifer Lerner, a decision scientist specializing in emotion, and Harvard Center for Global Tobacco Control Director Vaughan Rees finds evoking gratitude is more effective than using sadness to curb smoking. Lerner and Rees discussed their groundbreaking research and offered policy recommendations in a recent episode of the #HKSPolicyCast, emphasizing the need for collaboration between emotion scientists and the CDC. Trust in nonpartisan news is essential to civil society, yet it’s on the decline in the United States. A recent study authored by HKS's Julia Minson, Nancy Gibbs, and Dilan Tulan, alongside Georgetown's Charlie Dorison, reveals that language demonstrating active engagement with opposing views can build trust, regardless of the reader's political ideologies. This concept, known as conversational receptiveness, uses linguistic features like agreement, acknowledgment, subjectivity, and positive emotion. Congratulations to the October/November SEF2501 cohort on completing the Senior Executive Fellows program! We were fortunate to have perfect Fall weather and 78 fun and exceptional leaders from around the world. Their intellectual curiosity and commitment to learning—from both faculty and peers—were truly inspiring. Over the course of four weeks, they exemplified the mission and values of Harvard Kennedy School, particularly during times of uncertainty. Regardless of their diverse backgrounds, religions, or political views, these leaders displayed thoughtfulness, kindness, and respect for one another and the learning process. They demonstrated exceptional leadership by actively listening, showing genuine empathy, and remaining open to differing perspectives. Through their actions, they fostered an environment of trust and respect, setting a powerful example of what true leadership looks like. I have no doubt that the tools and frameworks they gained will empower them to be agents of change in their organizations and communities. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing the incredible impact you'll make in the world! #hksexecutiveeducation #leadership #sef #seniorexecutivefellow #changeagents #sefmarines #sefveterans #harvardkennedyschool #heretomakeadifference #askwhatyoucando #lexingtonandconcord #jfklibrary #sefhalloween #marinecorpsbirthday #veteransday #electionday #nathalielaidlerkylander #hannahrileybowles #rochellewalensky #reverendjeffreybrown #sefteam
