The World Health Organization reports that smoking is the leading cause of preventable death globally, claiming up to 8 million lives each year—more than wars and conflicts. Yet, the emotional impact of anti-smoking campaigns has been under-researched until now. New research from HKS Professor Jennifer Lerner, a decision scientist specializing in emotion, and Harvard Center for Global Tobacco Control Director Vaughan Rees finds evoking gratitude is more effective than using sadness to curb smoking. Trust in nonpartisan news is essential to civil society, yet it’s on the decline in the United States. A recent study authored by HKS's Julia Minson, Nancy Gibbs, and Dilan Tulan, alongside Georgetown's Charlie Dorison, reveals that language demonstrating active engagement with opposing views can build trust, regardless of the reader's political ideologies.
