  • In an interview with Robert Keene he reveals his approach to leading continuous improvement. Discover his strategies for identifying and developing leadership potential, and fostering collaboration in the face of challenges. 1. Leadership principles for driving CI. To me there a three parts to this.? ? ?First is I start with talking about “The will to win” determination to solve the problem and leave our workplace a little better each day. (Kaizen mindset)? ? ?Second I try to meet the people where they are, and go and see the problem and understand their point of view. (Gemba) ? ? Then I challenge them to try and make it better or try a different method. It’s worked well over the years. 2. Developing leadership potential. When identifying leaders, I look for those people who are really good at their job and those who others tend to gravitate to (your natural leaders). Then I give them opportunities to utilize their strength and build more skills. ? ?For the natural leader this means giving them a complex project where they will need to lead others when not part of the team. Forcing them to learn skills like delegation and high level thinking. ? ?For the person great at their job, it might be helping them to be a great mentor and connect more closely with those that they are leading. 3. Resistance to change. This is a hard one for me. I am not the most persuasive person because I like to sell with data. It just makes sense to me. So I usually take a persistence approach, since I rarely hit the nail on the head the first try. ?However, using visual tools like a Pareto chart or spaghetti diagram have really help me bring people along! 4. Collaboration and innovation? I am super lucky here. I have a very innovative team that is committed to solving our nations energy crisis. But to keep it going I do my best to recognize those who show collaboration and innovative thinking. This is where knowing your team is critical so you know how best to recognize people. Whether it be a thank you note, submitting them for an award, giving a public Kudos, or a monetary reward. It all depends on the person. • "Leading with empathy, communication, and example." We interviewed Demetrius Hardy, Co-Director of the HKPO Veterans Academy, to discuss his powerful leadership philosophy. He shared how building trust, setting clear goals, and continuous learning are key to motivating teams and achieving security objectives. ?? When asking Demetrius Hardy How HKPO focuses on leadership development. What is your philosophy on leadership, and how do you motivate and mentor teams to achieve security objectives?? ? He answered: "My philosophy on leadership centers around empathy, clear communication, and leading by example. I believe that a great leader must first understand and relate to their team members on a personal level, fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect. Effective communication is essential for conveying expectations, providing feedback, and ensuring that everyone is aligned with the overarching goals. Leading by example means demonstrating the values, work ethic, and behaviors you expect from your team, which inspires them to follow suit. To motivate and mentor teams to achieve security objectives, I focus on setting clear, attainable goals and providing the necessary resources and support to accomplish them. I encourage continuous learning and professional development, emphasizing the importance of staying current with industry trends and best practices. By recognizing and celebrating individual and team achievements, I create a positive and motivating work environment. Additionally, I provide constructive feedback and guidance, helping team members identify areas for improvement and develop their skills further. Ultimately, my goal is to empower my team to take ownership of their responsibilities and work collaboratively towards our shared security objectives." #leadership #mentorship #HKPO
