Edmonds School District, a longtime HKP client, approached the firm about designing prototypical structures for the playgrounds of several of their elementary schools. Typically, recently built Edmonds schools include covered outdoor play spaces to support playground time during drizzly Pacific Northwest days, but that left kids at schools that were built decades ago out in the rain. HKP approached this equity issue with a goal to elevate the playground spaces of these existing schools through thoughtful, beautiful, and economical design. Three schools are involved in the first set of play structures project: two steel structures at Brier Elementary and Martha Lake Elementary and one mass timber structure at Edmonds Elementary. The intent is to build the first prototypes out of two different structural materials to compare their buildability, cost effectiveness, and reception by the school communities and general public. The principals at each school are excited that students will not only be able to use these covered and lighted spaces for recess, but that they will double as shelters for pick-up and drop-off time. HKP worked with the principals to identify favorite recess and physical education activities, such as four-square, pickleball, and basketball, and laid out painted striping for these games beneath each structure. HKP hopes to continue partnering with the District to bring these play structure designs to several more school locations in the future! Stay tuned for construction updates this summer! #HKPArchitects #SustainableDesign #DesignedForPlay #SustainableArchitecture #ArchitectureForEducation #EdmondsSchoolDistrict #MassTimber #Sustainability

SAVE THE DATE!?HKP Architects is honored to present "Women of Carbon," a documentary showcasing women in construction making transformative, sustainable changes in efforts to combat climate change. This innovative work places them at the center of decarbonization, global health initiatives, and economic opportunities. Directed by Basia and Leonard Myszynski, "Women of Carbon" shares the journey and overarching vision these women share in making a better world. The women portrayed in this documentary are redefining our relationship with carbon in the built environment through repurposing materials, reengineering waste into valuable chemicals that help clean the climate, and driving decarbonization across industries. They share their challenges in life, work, and motherhood all while thriving in a male-dominated work space. The collective wisdom masterfully gathered by the Myszynskis and shared by these women comes together to form a singular belief and purpose to restore, protect, and preserve our planet and our futures. In the words of featured CEO Dr. Jennifer Holmgren: “The climate is not going to negotiate with us.” Join HKP for a screening of this empowering documentary followed by a panel of local women in construction and design (some of whom were featured in the film!) on April 25th, 2025 at the Mount Vernon Library Commons Community Room. Doors open from 5:00p to 8:00p. Free and open to the public; donations will be accepted for the Library Foundation for programs and initiatives regarding climate change. More details to come. #WomenofCarbon?#WomeninSustainability?#WomeninConstruction?#HKPArchitects?#SustainableDesign?#SustainableArchitecture?#BuildingForTheFuture?#WomeninDesign?#WomeninArchitecture
