Eliminating the Division of HIV Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would come at a cost to human lives. Cutting off the funding and the technical assistance that state health departments and community-based providers across the country rely on for HIV education, HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, programs would have devastating health and economic consequences. The lifetime cost of treating HIV is at least $500,000 per person — avoidable costs with the prevention tools available today.
