Where Healing Begins

关于我们

We put women at the center of our care and guide them during every step of their recovery. At Hitchcock Center for Women in Cleveland’s Hough-Glenville neighborhood, we help women break the cycle of substance abuse in a safe, supportive, and comfortable environment that promotes healing. Our care team recognizes that addiction affects women differently than men and that trauma, abuse, and mental health issues often accompany their addiction or are the root cause of it. Women also face different challenges when trying to get the help they desperately need. Mothers battling addiction shouldn’t have to choose between getting treatment and taking care of their children. We are one of the only residential treatment centers in the region where a woman can stay with her children (up to age 12) while she is receiving treatment. This unique accommodation helps keep families together and prevents additional trauma from separation.

The Hitchcock Center for Women helps women on every step of their recovery journey. Eilish Counts, Clinical Director at the Hitchcock Center shares that watching women come full circle in their recovery and return to help other women battling addiction is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. As the only recovery facility in Northeast Ohio that allows children up to 12 to live with their mothers during treatment, the Hitchcock Center has removed the barrier and fear that the women may lose custody of their children should they enter a treatment facility. Eilish states that allowing children to live with their mothers during treatment helps patient outcomes. The services offered at the Hitchcock Center are urgently needed in the community and their new facilities will increase their capacity to help women embark on their recovery journey. • Today, we celebrate Ruby Newton—not just for Women’s History Month, but for her 81st birthday! Ruby has been cooking since she was six years old, learning from her grandmother on a farm in Alabama. For the past year and a half, she’s shared that lifelong passion with Hitchcock, filling our kitchen with warmth, care, and incredible meals. While Ruby loves to cook, her true passion is people. Her mission in life has always been to serve others, believing that “our job is to give.” Whether it’s through a meal, a hug, or a prayer, she goes above and beyond every day to make a difference. Happy birthday, Ruby! Thank you for all that you do.?#WomensHistoryMonth

This Women’s History Month, we honor Jayne Mazzarella, whose pioneering work transformed addiction treatment for women. As a hospital social worker, Jayne quickly realized that nearly 40% of her hospital cases involved alcoholism, yet women’s struggles with addiction were often ignored. Driven by a passion for change, she became a strong advocate for women’s substance use treatment. In 1975, Jayne established Merrick Hall, the first hospital-based alcoholism program in the United States created specifically for women. The program offered a supportive, gender-specific environment for women to begin their recovery. By 1978, Jayne recognized the need for long-term recovery options, as Medicaid only covered a three-day stay in residential treatment. This led to the creation of Hitchcock Center for Women, a 12-bed halfway house that provided a supportive, homelike environment for women in recovery. Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 1974, Jayne continued her work with unwavering dedication until her passing in 1984. Jayne received the 1981 Jefferson Award for Outstanding Humanitarian Service, and her impact was recognized in Congress in 1985. Jayne Mazzarella’s legacy lives on through her groundbreaking work and the countless women whose lives were changed by her vision. This Women’s History Month, we remember her as a true champion of women’s health and addiction recovery. Thank you, Jayne.
