It was another fast-moving week of #AI news, with advances and slowdowns in products and strategies from major players and startups, alike. But a closer look revealed a certain serendipity among some of the more dramatic headlines. Gartner was in the news, sounding the alarm for the negative impact of AI and #GenAI on #datacenter energy, predicting power shortages in 40% of data centers within the next three years. On the same day, University of Pennsylvania’s Knowledge at Wharton featured a thoughtful story on the invisible cost of the power-hungry datacenter, noting that, “as AI models grow in complexity, the energy required to train and deploy them skyrockets.” But perhaps these folks didn’t hear last Thursday’s No Priors podcast, when NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang described what he called, “Hyper” Moore’s Law. “Over the next 10 years, our hope is to double or triple performance every year at scale – not at chip – at scale,” he told the hosts. “Therefore, [we’ll] be able to drive the cost down by a factor of two or three and drive the energy down by a factor of two or three every single year.” AlphaFold Watch: New to this round-up will be a weekly update on Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold 3, the AI model that accurately predicts the structure of proteins.
