Major milestone in carbon capture technology! As a global leader in Waste-to-Energy solutions, we are proud to have played a key role in the successful launch of the UK’s first carbon capture pilot at enfinium’s Ferrybridge Waste to Energy Plant, in partnership with enfinium. We supplied the technology, a containerised, scaled-down version of the CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology that enfinium could deploy across all its sites. This project represents a significant achievement for the UK's carbon capture sector and demonstrates the strength of HZI's cutting-edge technology in enabling large-scale CO? reduction. By integrating advanced carbon capture solutions, we are not just contributing to the UK’s #NetZero goals — we are actively shaping a sustainable future. We thank enfinium for the strong collaboration and the dedication of all involved teams in bringing this innovative project to life! Our director for power-to-gas and renewable hydrogen,?Bijan Cour?holding a speech this week at the annual ??????????-????-?????? ???????????????? ?????????????? by energie-cluster.ch and Stiftung Umwelt Arena Schweiz in Spreitenbach. This year's congress focused on the topics of #energystorage, #electricitysupplysecurity and the role of #PtX technologies in this context. Taking a broader look with a European focus, Bijan presented the role?power-to-gas?can play in the near future to support a continued growth of renewables.?Along with baseload power plants such as?waste-to-energy,?biogas?and nuclear based electricity, renewables are a solution for both a decarbonised grid and a stronger?energy security?for Europe.?While the share of renewables has more than doubled in the last 15 years and now supply more than 40% of the electricity consumed in Europe, the next decade may be much more challenging. Intermittency and the fact that the wind and sun are the same for all the power plants installed in a given region is a challenge for the grid stability, which must balance supply and demand at all times. These lead to increasingly fluctuating power prices,?curtailment, and eventually a drop in the profitability of the wind and solar parks, known as?"cannibalization". In order to be prepared for this transformation we need to: adapt consumption, develop storage, reinforce the grid or convert electricity through?electrolysis?and?methanation?into a gas that can be stored for very long periods in Europe’s existing gas infrastructure. PtG is one of the solutions that we need to launch now. The technology is ready and success requires an integrated approach to optimise energy conversion,?waste heat recovery?and plant flexibility. We thank all participants for the constructive discussions and interesting insights.?? #HitachiZosenInova #energytransition #ptx #ptg

HZI Delivers Slough Multifuel Facility to Client Ahead of Schedule! The Slough Multifuel Facility, a cutting-edge Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant designed by Hitachi Zosen Inova, has been successfully delivered ahead of schedule! This milestone allows us to hand over the facility to SSE plc and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, marking the beginning of full commercial operations which HZI will lead under a long-term O&M contract. What makes this project stand out? ?? Efficient Energy Generation: The facility will treat around 480,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, generating approximately 60MWe of electrical power for the UK’s National Grid and providing steam to a nearby business, furthering Slough’s circular economy. ??? Challenging Build: The plant’s location in a busy trading estate required precise planning to avoid disruption to near neighbours, and a 'Just in Time' delivery approach was adopted to streamline the construction phases. ?? Local Collaboration: This project reflects HZI’s commitment to local supply chains, employment, and collaboration with community stakeholders, ensuring minimal disruption across the 45-month construction period. We’re proud of this success that will power communities and businesses sustainably for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates on our continued work in the UK WtE sector! ?? ESWET warmly welcomes the United Nations Inger Andersen's, speech at the @International Forum on Green World Solidarity in Baku, Azerbaijan ??https://lnkd.in/dBY8FjzR The?message by the UN Environment Programme's Executive Director & UN Under-Secretary-General emphasises the critical need for innovative waste management solutions, and highlights the urgency of tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. These issues resonate deeply with the #WastetoEnergy (WtE) sector. The statistics are staggering, as Ms Andersen explained: ? "2.24 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste was produced globally in 2020? ? "The waste sector now accounts for 20% of all anthropogenic methane emissions"? ? "Just 9% of plastic waste is recycled" The alarming data above underscores the need for a shift towards circular economy approaches. #WtE is pivotal in this transformative change thanks to: ? Methane mitigation ? #Energy and material recovery ? Resource efficiency ? Treatment of pollutants in residual #waste In addition, we must address the open burning of waste, primarily plastics, and illegal waste dumping. These practices exacerbate #pollution and pose significant health risks. Serious efforts are also needed to manage plastics from production to final disposal, ensuring responsible handling and recycling. An ambitious global plastics treaty is necessary, but that would only be the start. As COP29 approaches, we echo the three crucial steps outlined by Ms. Andersen in her speech: ? Enhance waste management infrastructure and capabilities, especially in developing regions ? Foster sustainable product design and production to minimize waste ? Mobilise financial resources, including climate finance, to support waste management initiatives globally The WtE sector is committed to driving the required changes to ensure a sustainable future. The COP29 Azerbaijan should embrace the opportunity to make the #circulareconomy a global reality.
