Help save a piece of San José history! A commitment of $750,000 is needed by Friday 11/15 to ensure the preservation of the farmstead. Please share & visit our website to join us in preserving this cultural treasure, anything helps: https://lnkd.in/gNUyTinu The Sakauye Farmstead, located on Seely Avenue in San Jose, is among the last working orchards in the city. Around 1900, the Sakauye family planted the first fruit trees here, laying the foundation for the rich agricultural industry and thriving family business. However, along with 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry, Eiichi Sakauye and his family were unjustly incarcerated during World War II. Despite these hardships, Eiichi and his family were among the fortunate few who were able to keep their property and business. Now, a mixed use housing development and public park are planned for the site, but no current plans include preserving the historic farmhouse that still stands there today. Eiichi Sakauye's home is a treasured piece of San Jose's history, representing the resilience and contributions of Japanese American families in our community. Relocating this home to History Park ensures it remains a vital learning space, where future generations can explore the rich cultural heritage of San Jose and the Japanese American experience. Through educational programs, students will step back in time and discover the inspiring story of Eiichi and his family, honoring their legacy and deep roots in our city. Join us in preserving this cultural treasure so that students and visitors alike can experience this inspiring story.
关于我们
History San José collects, preserves and celebrates the stories of diversity and innovation in San José and the Santa Clara Valley. History San José operates three locations: History Park — a historical and cultural campus featuring 19 partner organizations who each tell their own history in their own words; the Peralta Adobe-Fallon House Historic Site — one of the oldest and most significant locales in San José; and the Collection Center — the Valley’s collective memory. Every day we continue to collect contemporary history documenting the social and political happenings in the Valley. We preserve a collection of more than 500,000 artifacts, including a Research Library and Archives used by locals as well as a world-wide audience. We celebrate the Valley’s history by creating exhibitions featuring the collections; by engaging the community in fun hands-on family programs and events; and by offering award-winning standards-based school programs for over 20,000 students and their teachers each year. The organization is supported by more than 270 volunteers and interns, and by a membership who values history and believes that by celebrating it we can create a community with a strong sense of place that respects cultural diversity and innovation. I invite you to explore the website and to re-discover Silicon Valley, and rediscover History San José by joining us.

Here's your chance to tour the oldest home in California! Come down to San Pedro Square Market this Saturday, Oct 12 from 1pm-4pm and learn all about the Gonzales/Peralta Adobe! Tours are normally paid and by appointment only. Don't miss out! Take advantage of parking in the Market & San Pedro Square Parking Garage (45 N San Pedro St). Parking is free for the first 90mins in this and other ParkSJ garages. More info at ParkSJ.org About the Gonzales/Peralta Adobe: Many people are surprised to learn that the oldest home in California is nestled in the center of the modern-day San Pedro Square Market. The adobe was built in 1797 by the family of José Manuel Gonzeles, an indigenous person of N’Dee descent and the second mayor of San José. The second occupant was Luís María Peralta, who held the highest office in the community as commissioner. Both were part of the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition. The adobe is the last remaining structure from El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe. Venture inside the home and see two rooms furnished as they might have been when they were occupied by the Gonzales and Peralta families.

World Teachers' Day is a chance to show appreciation for the hard work of educators everywhere. Here at History Park, we pay tribute to the many teachers who have occupied the Santa Ana one room schoolhouse. During the 1800s, children in the nation’s rural areas attended schools much like the Santa Ana School. Rural schools were located within five miles walking distance of their homes. This schoolhouse was completed in 1872 in Hollister, at a cost of $2000. Grades one through eight were taught at the Santa Ana School. Some students had to work on the farm and took longer to complete school than others. Consequently, the age of the children in one classroom could range from six to eighteen. The students were seated with girls on one side of the room and the boys on the other. The boys and girls even had separate entrances to the schoolroom. A total of 54 teachers taught at the Santa Ana School #LivingHistory #EducatorAppreciation. It was last used as a kindergarten classroom in 1974, where kindergarten teacher Elizabeth Gates-Rianda closed out that final teaching evolution. In 1998, the San Jose State University Connie L. Lurie College of Education Alumni Board raised funds to move the school house to History Park. The structure was subsequently renovated and dedicated. Today, the schoolhouse serves as one of the locations visited during our Early to Rise program, where elementary school students can experience an abridged 1870s school day of writing on slates, practicing their elocution, and minding their manners. Interested in booking? Registration for the 2024-2025 school year is open on our website! ???? #historypark #historysanjose #worldteachersday #TeacherAppreciation
