Excited to share we received an inaugural Golden Grant from the Alexandria Historical Society to update our indexes for the Hooe related ledgers! Pending transcript completions, we will be collating them into one master index, adding account holders and shoppers, as well as merging the index with the previously created Glassford & Henderson index to better understand the community over time. https://lnkd.in/gVUsRBAW

We are pleased to announce a new addition to our Shopping Stories Transcription Project. You may remember we shared an adventure taken to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's John D. Rockefeller Library earlier this year? One of the account books we looked at was a complement to a known ledger from Jenifer & Hooe found at the New York Public Library. Starting today, you can help us transcribe the journal from Williamsburg's collections; the Journal of Jenifer & Hooe, 1775-1778, has been digitized and is ready to transcribe on From the Page (note it is found in two parts, 1775 and 1776-1778). BTW, why were the locals so concerned on 25 March 1776 that they sent an express rider to St. Mary's/Coan (Maryland) to look for Ships of War off the coast? Enjoy exploring purchases (and payments) made by Alexandrians during the early years of the Revolution! https://lnkd.in/eQPqA4Mv Image courtesy of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (J&H_1775_760325).

We are excited to announce that we received a Historic Alexandria Foundation grant this year to digitize the final 18th-century volume connected to Robert Townsend Hooe at the New York Public Library (MssCol 3584), as well as to expand our transcribing capability with From the Page! The letterbook of Hooe & Harrison from February 10, 1789-October 11, 1796, will allow us to understand what the merchants were ordering/receiving, who their trade partners were, and see more deeply into the daily operations of the Alexandria store during a period when we do not have comparable ledgers. This book includes letters sent to many places along the East Coast, as well as England, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, and Germany. The greatest challenge will be they are not all in English, so we'll need help with transcribing letters in French and Spanish - and then translating the letters into English. Many thanks to the Historic Alexandria Foundation for their continued support of History Revealed and the Shopping Stories Project!
