History Colorado creates a better future for Colorado by inspiring wonder in our past. Established in 1879, the Colorado Historical Society — now known as History Colorado — offers the public access to cultural and heritage resources of Colorado, including statewide museums and special programs for individuals and families, collection stewardship of Colorado’s historic treasures, educational resources for schools, students and teachers, services related to preservation, archaeology and history, and a research library. It is headquartered in the History Colorado Center in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District.

Chipeta (1843–1924) was a Ute woman known for her intelligence, judgment, empathy, bravery, and quiet strength, all of which made her the only woman of her time allowed on the Ute council. She was also the wife of Ouray, whom the United States recognized as the de facto Ute leader in the late nineteenth century. This meant that, like her husband, she was caught in the middle of two colliding worlds. As an influential indigenous person during the period when Colorado was incorporated into the United States, her commitment to peace helped shape the state, even as it resulted in the removal of her people from their ancestral homelands. Read more about her story: https://lnkd.in/ggMMzptV Despite all Chipeta and Ouray’s efforts, they could not protect the Utes from forced relocation. The relocation hung heavy on Chipeta’s heart until she died on August 17, 1924. Less than a year after her death, on May 24, 1925, Chipeta was reburied near the house she had shared with Ouray near Montrose, Colorado. This has since become a memorial site, a public park, and the Ute Indian Museum. The museum opened in 1956 and is dedicated to preserving the history of Colorado’s Ute people. - Image: History Colorado 91.315.42

Nearly 40,000 students, teachers, and chaperones visited the History Colorado Center on field trips during the 2023–2024 school year. They mostly hailed from the Denver metropolitan area, but came from all over the state—from Ignacio on the Southern Ute reservation to Iliff in the far northeastern corner. These field trips provide important opportunities for students to connect to state academic standards for social studies. On each two-hour guided tour, students explore immersive, hands-on exhibitions to learn what it was like to live in different cultural and historical contexts that shaped and continue shaping life in Colorado; the ways in which Coloradans have used and managed water; or how communities fought to uphold democratic principles of equality and justice. Your gift to History Colorado will help ensure we can continue hosting field trips, to give students and teachers the opportunity to explore and bridge the gap between Colorado’s history and the here and now. Give today: https://lnkd.in/gQsK5TEB All gifts through December 10 will help us achieve our goal. Thank you for igniting your curiosity for Colorado!

???????? History Colorado and Denver Fire Department are proud to announce that Fire Station No. 3 – also known by its motto “Pride of the Points” – has been added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of our Colorado Heritage for All Initiative! Owned and operated by Denver Fire Department since 1931, Fire Station No. 3 is Denver’s longest continually operated firehouse, and is being recognized due to the valor and dedication of the all-Black fire crews who served the multicultural Five Points Neighborhood faithfully. “Being recognized on the National Register of Historic Places is a significant honor for Station No. 3, as it not only highlights the historical and cultural importance of the fire department but also emphasizes the legacy and enduring value of the department within the community,” said Denver Fire Chief Desmond G. Fulton. “This designation honors the resilience and contributions of African American firefighters who served this community during a challenging time in our history and underscores the importance of Station No. 3 as not just a facility, but a heritage site that reflects the bravery and dedication of all firefighters who have served for generations. This recognition increases the public awareness and support for the Denver Fire Department, and the brave men and women who selflessly serve their fellow citizens, while also strengthening community ties and enhancing their role in preserving local history.” - History Colorado 2022.14.1, 98.182.1 #PreserveCO #HistoricColorado #ColoradoPreservation
