Through strong community partnerships, relevant educational programming, intentional collecting practices, and historic preservation advocacy we strive to inspire our audience to become empathetic and engaged participants in their communities, cultivate a love of learning and greater understanding about our shared past, and serve as a trusted community resource for Cherokee County history. History Cherokee operates the Cherokee County History Center. Although located in downtown Canton, the museum documents the history of all of Cherokee County spanning from Native American inhabitants to the industries, people, and events which shaped the area to what it is today. Last Friday, we felt the Husky spirit from Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy ?? Over 180 students took a guided tour through the galleries at the Cherokee County History Center and participated in two interactive workshops: one on the regions and rivers of GA, the other on the Cherokee Syllabury and culture. We want to thank both Georgia Power Company Foundation and City of Canton, Georgia for sponsoring this field trip, the teachers for supervising, and our staff and volunteers for making this possible! Interested in booking a field trip to the History Center? Our Education Manager, Kady, has been busy this past week with school groups! Last week, Wild Beginnings Home School group came to the museum for a guided tour through our exhibits led by Kady. During their trip, the kids got a sneak peek into our now open temporary exhibit, “A Century of Toys: 100 Years of Play.” Then earlier this week, over 100 students from Birmingham Falls Elementary came to the History Center for a guided tour, story time, and activities at the Canton Theatre. We want to give a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers, staff, and our friends at the Historic Canton Theatre for making this possible. #Education #FieldTrips #MuseumTrip #HistoryIsHere

The Cherokee County History Center features many fascinating artifacts from the past like this Medical Kit on loan from Juanita Hughes/Preservation Woodstock. This medical kit was used by Dr. William Hiram Dean (1824-1912). After moving to Cherokee County in 1851, he served as a surgeon in the Confederacy during the Civil War. Following his service in the war, he became a traveling doctor and brought his medical kit to people’s houses to tend the sick and injured. His grandson, Linton Dean, ran Dean's Store in Woodstock, which became a staple in Woodstock for over 75 years. To help us preserve stories and artifacts like this, consider making a gift to the Preserving our Legacy fund. Now is the time to leave a lasting legacy while supporting all of the work that History Cherokee does within and beyond our community. We are thrilled to share our deepest gratitude to Lee Garrison Lusk and Brittani daCamara Lusk for their generous sponsorship of the Emerging Businesses Exhibit! Lee and Brittani share a love for historic renovation and real estate investment. Together they have transformed numerous properties throughout Cherokee County, most notably The Wheeler House in Ball Ground. Although they are now parents to three sons, Lee and Brittani are still active in running The Wheeler House and they continue to be actively involved in historic preservation. When asked about what inspires her and Lee to restore historic properties, Brittani stated, “Anybody can build something new but it takes a certain level of creativity and innovation to revitalize something historic. It's often not the easiest route, but it's always an extremely rewarding challenge when we complete a project and breathe new life into a historic building once forgotten.” We are incredibly fortunate to have Lee and Brittani’s support for the Emerging Businesses exhibit, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate the innovation and entrepreneurship that help our community thrive. Thank you, Lee and Brittani, for your generous sponsorship and for all you do in the community! Funds raised from the Preserving our Legacy Exhibit Fund support essential operating expenses, including educational programming, scholarships for summer camp, and school tours. Yesterday we had the honor of cutting the ribbon for a new marker commemorating Historic Stumptown. For a mid-July morning, we could not have had better weather. Thank you to the City of Canton for working with us on the marker and thank you to everyone who attended the ribbon cutting. All of us at History Cherokee enjoyed spending the morning with you, hearing your stories, and commemorating this important place.
