I did a search on Google to see "which industries are easy to get into for your first job", and most of the links reference retail, hospitality, sales, customer service, food service, and others. There was no mention of manufacturing, construction, or any type of light industrial jobs. This proves that manufacturing is simply losing the marketing battle - even writers, journalists, analysts, and bloggers don't even remember to mention manufacturing as a viable option for those just entering the workforce. People will naturally think of retail, sales, and food service as job options because those industries get a lot more exposure than manufacturing. When was the last time anyone took Friday afternoon off to visit industrial parks for fun? Knowing this, manufacturing companies must invest in their online presence and employer branding in order to become more visible and attractive to candidates. Here are some ideas: 1. Have a consistent and lasting presence on social media sites like LinkedIn and Facebook 2. Encourage their existing employees to help promote the company to their networks 3. Create more attractive job postings by highlighting the perks and benefits they offer 4. Create a shorter and simpler application process 5. Post photos of their work environment and employees online 6. Create a video to show what "a day in the life" of certain roles look like These are just some small ideas that are fairly easy to implement. Any companies that steps up their efforts will surely stand out! What are some things manufacturing companies are doing to attract candidates that you know of?
