Delida Costin—who spent nearly two decades in-house, including stints as GC of Pandora and Grove Collaborative—recently wrote a LinkedIn post on what she calls her "first things first" philosophy. The impetus was receiving yet another call from a lawyer seeking advice on how to approach the first first 90 days. Her answer? Everything. But at the right cadence. “You’re going to get hit with a deluge of information and tasks,” she said. “You need a system to ingest as much as possible, organize it, and then figure out what your output is going to be.” New legal leaders, she said, should spend time with the CEO, chief financial officer, chief human resources officer, board members, and their own teams, not just to understand priorities but to ask the same questions across different groups and look for gaps in how they answer. “The board might say one thing, your CEO might say another, and your team might have a completely different perspective,” Costin said. “You have to triangulate those answers to figure out what’s really going on.” Once she has those insights, Costin said she would take “a hard look at the legal department’s current state.” “Are we aligned with the company’s goals? Are we seen as a strategic partner or a cost center?” she wrote on LinkedIn. “I’d dig into people, processes, and tech to find opportunities. But I don’t have kids, So …. That got me wondering: What kind of legacy, if any, should I focus on? Then, in a conversation with my awesome #womenandwealth group, Julie pointed out: "Look at all the work you do to support # femalefounders. That impact is your legacy." That hit me. And reassured me. Legacy isn’t just about family. It’s about impact. ?? We tend to think of legacy as something we create—but often, it’s something we’re already building.
