Hip Hop For The People was founded to create the communal space for Hip Hop Culture to thrive. Every healthy Hip Hop scene in the world started with space. A space where Hip Hop could grow and thrive on a stable foundation that fostered community participation. Today, corporate consolidation of the media and entertainment market has almost erased well-organized community spaces in which Hip Hop is fully invested. Artists are finding it harder and harder to find spaces to practice their skills and find opportunities to perform their craft, leading to a huge deficit in which kinds of narratives are being promoted. Unless you fit the stereotypical mainstream rap narratives, there is no support or safe space to get on. We’re creating a grassroots-funded platform that elevates our most powerful voices in Bay Area Hip Hop, centered around the heart of Hip Hop Culture; The Show. Your support will create a free, weekly event that will support two artists with a well-paid platform to perform for the community. We’ll couple these acts with a Freestyle Cypher that is open to the public, creating community and giving newcomers a space to practice their craft again. Each event will also be a space for education as every event will highlight a different issue impacting marginalized and historically oppressed social groups.? In this way, we will retake the power to promote and lift up those voices in our neighborhoods that represent The Culture with skill and intentionality. Our communities have always been spear-headed by our most powerful cultural narratives. When our Hip Hop scene is healthy again, our community will be healthier as well.
